Loss of power, ECU light on and limp home!?

#1 by Big T , Sat Jun 22, 2013 4:51 pm

Hiya,

I have an 02 l200. Was driving today pulling a trailer (was empty at the time) uphill and the ECU light came on, power dropped and I assume it went into limp home mode! I have heard this might be due to overboost, any tips on how to cure this? How do I reset the ECU so the light goes out??

Cheers!

Anthony.

Have a read of this mr T How to :- Adjust Turbo Overboost

whenever I've had the engine light on and lost power, I've pulled over , turned the engine and ignition off for a minute and then restarted and its reset itself. Not done it enough times for me to adjust mine yet

Yeah its happened to me a few times also..a real common issue.im not suggestions its the answer but after a service mine stopped doing it..however due to the fact its very intermittent, this could be coincidence.

I agree with Daz and Krut. Mine has done this to me in the past. And I have just done the same as Krut and pulled over.

Ok, so looks like nothing to worry about then! I think I will try and adjust the overboost as I do a fair bit of towing and this could become a pain!

T, I would be tempted now you know how easy it is to reset , to leave it till it does it again before you have a fiddle. I reckon mine has done it maybe 10 times in about 8 years so never bothered me. Mine has only done it when I've hung on to a gear for a bit tooo long towing on a hill and twice I've had it when having to swerve (quite severely mind), once was to avoid a deer and the other to avoid the front end of a tractor coming out of a gateway. Not entirely sure how the erratic swerves would have caused mine but they did none the less.

BT dont forget to give the adjuster screws a good soaking with a penetrating oil ( not KY Jelly) before any of the bright sparks wake up on a sunday morning... for a few days before getting stuck into them..

Lez,
would adjusting the screws improves MPG too?

Not that you would notice, they will very slightly improve the engines overall performance, so there would be a slight gain, but nothing to write home about

that was an interesting question and dont even remember it being asked before. Taking this a step further Lez , would it theoretically be possible to change the turbo on these classics to one that would spool up lower so would reduce the need for higher revs as surely revs is the overall killer of MPG (and engines too for that matter)

Kurt that is what decatting and getting a replacement K&N will do.... faster exhaust through the turbo ( no cat to stop it) and better quantity of air in ( Via the K&N)... there is a possibility of replacing the turbo, but this will involve lots of work..

this would possibly explain why its not common practice then .....

Someone with the right technology it would just be a mechanical exercise, but you already know how finicky the 4D56T is with regards to overboost..
Need to know all the turbo charactertics before even considering it.
Maybe we could just let the boost pressure sensors lie a little... overboost, but be correct as far as the sensors are concerned, if we could 'tamper' with the sensor readings and allow the ECU to turn up the output of the turbo.................MMMMMMMMMM .........thinking now..
