FAO Lez ...leccy question... ( not L200 )

#1 by ronniecabers , Mon Oct 07, 2013 6:17 pm

Evening Lez,

Probably a simple answer to this but here goes anyways...

Got a shitreon C3 1.4 Sx ( with Aircon ) and the radiator fan seems to have decided to die!. The thing is it appears to be controlled by the ECU. I have checked for voltage from all cables to the fan , when the engine is running hot and all seem to be giving voltage ( except the earths obviously! ) Tried it off the car and still had no joy with getting the fan to actually work. Now my question is Can I buy a different type of fan and put it on the car . I'm not worried about the Aircon ( which uses the same fan ), just want to keep my engine cool! The main question is would I need a relay for the fan if I put it on a switch in the cabin, or is it possible to wire it ( somehow ) into the cars wiring, bearing in mind I have a permanent Live and Earth and then three? control signal wires, and most of these replacement fans would be only two wires. Also with the fan being on the engine side of the radiator would I be right in assuming it is a ' Pull ' fan ?

Unfortunately that's for a diesel ( Hdi ) and I can get an aftermarket type fan ( generic ) fan for about £20 the bay of e's it just wouldn't work the a/c...don't see how scrap yards can justify £60 - £70 and a new one on ebay varies betwenn £130 - £200

Cheers for looking for me though

The extra wires are most likely because it runs two speeds, most fans these days have a slow speed and a high speed.
Ronnie what year is it and I'll try to get out local lads to dig you one out for the weekend..and courier it down to you.. (it'll be cheap I promise..)

Hi Lez,

Cheers for that , I understand the dual speeds but why oh why run a radiator fan from the ecu? Why I'm on the subject of stupid ideas ( in my opinion ) , who's idea was electronic power steering too? Blinking making it hard to work on cars these days..almost making cars throw away items when they reach a certain value!

Anyhows back to the thread........Its a 52 plate..I'll Pm you the full range in case you need it.

The speeds are controlled according to the temp much more tightly, maintaining an optimum temp for the engine to run at will improve the fuel economy..
Electronic power steering gives the ECU contol for ESP ( Electronic Stability Program ) stopping you shifting the 4rse end out when you wanna boot it round corners, by knowing the speed, steering angle and the power at the wheels it can drive under max power and steering whilst maintaining full control..

They've obviously never driven a c3.....couldn't imagine the arse end shifting out in one of them

But back to your main answer....that explains them and now I understand but still a pain when it goes wrong!

Completely agree mate, gets to something when you cannot change a set of brake pads.. without a computor to depressurise the system, turn off the electronic parking brake, then do the reverse after changing them... or try and bleed the brakes of a late transit after changing one of thier shyte external handbrake mess calipers, whick sieze after a fog.. lol..
have to turn on the ABS Pump by computor to bleed the system..
