I think Its legal to sell the paperwork.. Its only illegal when you try to apply the paperwork to the wrong car!! So if the person who buys this just happens to own the relevant car then every one is happy.. The chances of that actually happening are of course virtually nil..

As Andy says.... The seller is doing nothing wrong.

And it's easy to get new VIN plates made up too.

It's just a piece of paper so it's perfectly legal to sell it (and some of them are "cherished" docs"). What would be illegal would be to use them to falsely claim that a different motor was represented by the docs.

Now, here's an interesting one --> Werbung: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-GSX750-...M-/360779241575

I am absolutely sure that the seller is above board and not suggesting any ulterior use (and, ooooh, hope he's not a member on here ) but why would you want just a frame and its V5?
What if you had, err, come into possession of a GSX 750 and for reasons that we won't go into, you don't have the documentation? Hmmmm.... here's a V5 with either a chassis (if you can be arsed) or a VIN plate (if you can't)...

When it comes to custom bikes this is by far the easiest way to build one, rake the headstock and then just bolt on the parts and fit whatever engine suits you.. did one or two lke this years ago, the chassis (frame) is what's the ID number is for, not the parts bolted to it..

I'm sure there are legal uses for the frame and docs, Lez

Equally sure that they would be useful to, err, less scrupulous peoples

Quite an old model bike though this one Skot, that was why I said what I did, if it were for a late model 'anything' then I'd agree..

So the real issue here is what your intentions are for buying anything like this then ? for example, it's certainly not against the law to own a baseball bat and a balaclava (think this was mentioned recently), the grey area comes from what you intend to use it for I guess.
My next question may be more complicated then .......
when does a vehicle become what is on the log book? Take Stormforce for another example, if he were to sell the log book for his truck, what else would he have to sell to make it legit ? would it be the chassis or the shell ? If I transfer all the bits from my truck onto his chassis, would the truck still be registered as his or mine ?
If this thread has wandered into territory that shouldn't be discussed then apologies as that is/was not my intention but I'm just interested in where the line is drawn ? Mods please decide if this needs moving etc ? @skotl @Nick @stormforce @LezT @Alan G @Manraj @Basil @Admin

The chassis and the log book (V5) are the main components, if I were to buy rich's log book and chassis and fit halftracKs and a 12ltr cummins engine and gearbox, it would have to go away and be VIC checked and would be registered as
A) the original vehicle ( if sufficiently similar to the original)
or
B) A 'variant' which would mean it will be issued with a 'Q' plate registration number ( because there is just very little similarity to the original vehicle.)

@UGLYMICK would be a good one to ask here as he imports motorcycles and makes them into trikes..

What happens in HGV land when a chassis cab ( really a chassis with a dashboard) is sold for converting into a coach. ? It will maintain its chassis number and ( not registered yet so no reg no ) its make identity, although it will become something very different from the original vehicle. Dustcarts are anothe sample as they are shipped out as just a chassis and engine, not even a dash. Drive train is added by the dustcart maker..

so what makes a "complete" L200 then the V5 and chassis or the V5 and shell ? and if it's the chassis then what happens with cars without chassis then ?

Vehicle without a chassis will have a crush frame construction with a 'Crash Cab' so to speak, this will bear the chassis number.
Mark.... I didn't know theat about the frame and two bits mate, thanks..

it`s like with kit cars, you have to use a certain % of the doner car, once you`ve built it it has to be checked etc and they`ll rename it as what it is now, I had a jago jeep, the doner car was a ford escort mk2, but the log book said jago jeep, if you don`t have the name changed you`ll won`t be able to get an mot etc, the chassis had changed from the escort and so had the chassis number, so I think you just have to prove that a certain amount of the car comes from the one on the log book

Ock Is correct.. There is a points system, the original engine may score you 4 points and the suspension may be another 2or 3. the original chassis is the big point scorer though, but so long as you score the correct points for that type of Vehicle. It actually becomes that vehicle. Mini's are the worlds worst when it comes to this.. I have seen mk1 minis and pre 72 minis for sale on the bay for silly £££. And all are obviously fake. But Strangely LEGAL!!

well, maybe ebay have made their views clear on this perhaps as the listing has been removed
it is interesting to know where the boundries are though when replacing parts on a vehicle and as mentioned above the classics such as minis and VWs must be all held together with new or salvaged parts to have lasted this long.
