struggleing to start

#1 by mike edwards , Tue Mar 25, 2014 10:51 pm

right then lads and ladies brought a warrior the other week with suspected fubar engine turns out it was the front keyway on the crank and the timing hadn't moved so i fitted all new pulleys like balancer pulley, cambelt pulley, and external pulley aswell as the sandwich plates and timing pick up ring and a new crank sensor all belts were changed. built it all up and fired it up all seemed ok untill i turned it off and left it a while tryed starting it again afterwards and it takes alot of trying to get it going but once started seem to run alrite and rev up all ok.

so could anyone shred any light as to why it could be taking ages to start ?????????????????????

its also had a new cylinder head before i brought it by the previous owner

Could be the filter so change the fuel filter. Also does the plunger get hard after pumping it a few times. If not then the diaphram will be knacked and a replacement fuel filter housing will be required

Could also be knackered glow plugs..but fuel filter is my best guess

Is the filter still hot when you go to restart.

the fuel filter is new and the primer is working as its hard once pressed but I didn't think about testing the glowplugs I shall whip them out and also check the feed going to them.

once it is started it starts all the time until left for about an hour then will start playing up again

perhaps check the timing on the pump? being a few degrees out can cause this.

did you use timing marks on the timing cover or on the block?

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem to me, likely caused by a tiny air leak somewhere. Eventually get it started, drive, the pressure builds up and youre fine. Park up, pressure drops and when you come to start it the pump is having to partially prime itself before itll start. I could be wrong, but the sy,ptoms you describe are classic.

saying that, our sprinter is like that. it starts and runs for a second and conks out. but if you put your foot on the throttle a bit to keep it going it's usually fine...

I haven't had time to get back onto it yet been snowed under with other raceing cars and working but will hopefully try and get on it this Saturday so will let u know.

I thought it could be a slight diesel leak but I'd imagine its going to be after the pump maybe on the return side as the primer pump isn't loosing pressure but I cant see any visible leaks so I shall have to check the leak off rail on the injectors and see if they've been fitted properly

did you try the glow plugs yet ?
when mine were on the way out, I turned the ignition on and waited for the relay click, then turned off and repeated a few times and it started fine.

the plugs where fine all getting a feed and when i whipped them all out they all worked when i tested them now a further fault occured which is pointing me to a leaking injector fault.

well being as the intercooler is disconnected and 1 vac pipe is off at them minute so a normal egine would run ok altho abit lumpy but should still run ok well after fitting the glowplugs back in i started it up (for the first time 2nite) and after a few attempts it fired but revved up on its own i then shut it off tryed again and the same problem occured (revving up on its own) i'm thinking its got a leaking injector or 4 lol that could be where im loosing fuel pressure aswell, has anyone had this problem before????????????

or have i just brought a lemon

Like you say the only way it can rev up itself is if the injectors are leaking. Also causing fuel leak off and loss of pressure for the first start. But would u need more than one leaking injector to cause it to rev up? What is the smoke like on first start up. What colour?? Just wondering if you get coloured smoke from the injectors leaking excess diesel into the pots when it's stood.

it was thick dark smoke i cant say blue or black as i was too busy making sure i hadnt knackerd ote up lol and im assuming its going to be more than 1 as it revved up as tho there was a excssive amount of unburnt fuel in the cylinder

Is that next on the list then. To get them tested. If so then I'm sure someone on here will have a set you can borrow to test it out. Save you paying to get yours done if it's not them that's the problem.

Faulty fuel pump can cause self revving. Diesel runaway can also cause it, though you wouldn't be able to stop that by just shutting down.

Milners have them for £45 each and that's including vat and washers which doesn't seem too bad...2 tanks of fuel! but like said cheaper if you could borrow a set first to make sure it's them/or test them
