It's a chain on the 4m40 engine. Is it rattling or are you just wanting to get it done??

A garage will charge a days labour to change it. Head should come off to take the timing cover off. You can take the sump off and remove the cover without dropping the head but it's more fiddly. All the pajero lads now just put a split link chain on. Only takes an hour. I'm waiting on a chap who is getting me a split link for mine. There is loads about for the double chain engines but mine is a single chain and no one sells em. Is yours double or single??

There is the engine manual in the tech section. It tells you how to check to see if your chain is too over stretched. Mine is still the original chain on 110 000 miles. Just keep regular oil changes with the 2.8. Good quality 15/40. And keep the cooling system clean as the biggest problem with these engines is blowing a head. But they will go all day long if looked after.
