Electric colling fan conversion.

#1 by Antonio , Thu May 29, 2014 11:24 am

Hi all, another question
As i will be doing a 4" body lift and i want the radiator to stay as high as posible (this is to maximise space for the winch) i will have to make the switch to a 16" electric fan, are there any fans on any particular car or van i could use or would it be advisable to go for a new kit. will be rippin out air con from front as that is beyond repair an dont need it anyway, hoppin it will give better air flow.

i am sure some one on forum used an electric fan on k74 and it was not efficient enough to cool engine, it works for other cars though, may be fan was to small.

@Basil had an electric fan on his minimog. Not sure it was man enough on its own but there is a man who at least went halfway there

I'm looking into the same idea of a 2nd fan as there is basically hardly any of the radiator exposed due to the original fan and the aircon rad which I am removing to allow a 2nd fan.Thinking of just sourcing another L200 fan from the scrappy
@LezT Will this work just connecting to existing fan or am I better buying something different?

Better to have a temp switch fitted in the top hose to control the fan.. gat one here that just fits in the top hose and simple wiring jobbie gets it to control the fan...Add a fan to the existing system so no matter what you must increase it's cooling capacity..

the problem we have is we can easy fit deeper rads but very hard to fit wider/taller rads, the deeper rads just give you more water volume which does not really aid cooling.
its all to do with surface area which increases cooling efficiency, its all to do with basic heat exchange. so we are stuck with the fan.

Geoff added a 13" fan off a 3.5T Merc / Iveco van to his classic.
Just had it on a switch and used it as and when required.

Hi All,
Been on the phone to Pacet fans, talked to technical department and explained what i needed.
They do a high performance fan but these have cooling holes around the motor and could be an issue with water and mud in the long run.
They do an MOD one for heavy duty aplications, this is watertight etc, and is a twin fan.
I have asked them to e-mail me the details, images....and package price.

Will post details as soon as they contact me.
T.

And it worked really well offroading, but as there was no air con on either truck, the 13" fan fitted perfectly where the AC fan normally goes, then acts as a pull fan for the oil cooler and a push fan for the main rad. It would be great in motorway jams (we just dont see much traffic here
