Expansion tank hose and remote central locking

#1 by Vix , Tue Jun 10, 2014 2:02 pm

Hello All,

The previous owner of my L200 has seen fit to cut the expansion tank hose down to about 2 inches long... can anyone think of any reason why they would have done this?

Also

I have the workshop manual for our L200 (2003 Warrior) and in the central locking breakdown it shows a remote central locking unit, is this something you can purchase/upgrade?

Many thanks

Hello mr Vix
quite a few have added a remote central locking kit. @LezT has talked many through what to do and what wires go where etc so he may be able to help.
I cant think of any benefit of cutting the hose down , maybe someone else may have some ideas on this ?

Hey Mr Vix,
Do you mean the hose from the rad to the exp. tank or the overflow hose? If it's the overflow hose, don't worry about it. If it's the rad-tank hose......

Remote locking is doable as Mr The Krutterdile says. you can either get the aftermarket kit (common enough) and I'm sure if there is a mitsi part available you could do it, but I am not aware of this being done.

Have you just got the vehicle??

The only reason I can think of for shortening that hose is to hide any bubbling coming from the cooling system, like head gasket

(This is only my thought so please don't go panicking just yet.......lol)

Mr V central locking should have been factory installed, does it work from the key in the lock, passenger side and drivers side..?

Going back a few years, I had a cobra 2-1 upgrade fitted to my classic.
Which means, it upgrades the immobiliser to thatcham standard and the fob operates remote central locking.
Good reliable system.
Downside about £250 ish fitted

Thank you for all your helpful comments. The hose i'm refering to is the one that goes down into the expansion tank from the centre of the cap. I have bought some replacement hose as have been advised that it should be at least 7 inches long. I suppose once it's fitted it will clarify if it has been cut to hide any unpleasant surprises... I'll try and post a picture from my workshop manual showing a remote central locking unit and you guys can see what you think. Currently waiting to get the Warrior back on the road after mistakingly diagnosing it with a faulty water pump only to find, after removing more parts from a vehicle than is advisable for a mediocre unskilled cave man like me, and unwittingly destroying the lower timing belt cover, to find it was a faulty sender/sensor and also working myself into a bit of a frenzy about the expansion tank being cool when the engine is up to temperature, expecting the system to act like a car and be returned by the waterpump at all times. After a bit of head stratching and actually stopping to look at what the hoses do/go I feel I have learned something new!!!!

erm...... doh!

Cenrral locking is factory fitted and working fine I was looking for a quick plug and play remote unit that I hoped Mitsi would do...

Mr Vix... as we haven't been properly introduced...the expansion tank will only get a very small percentace of water from the cooling system before, during and after a run, I would estimate around 0.25lt..
The hose into the tank will just need to end below the min mark in the tank under cold conditions ( after overnight) this is so it can draw back the coolant expelled when it gets hot and expands slightly... the level in the bottle will change by around 10-15mm ( higher when hot)..
I'll find a link to the in cab fuse box where the Locking controller fits ( from memory at the bottom at the back...) where-else would a bottom be...

As far as I know there was key operated locking or remote operated locking, but it was a different ETACS Control unit used for each..

The aftermarket kits for central locking remote control aren't that hard to fit, plenty on the bay of e's ...... and @LezT can certainly talk you through that bit ( I think, what ya reckon Lez? )...unless of course you have the different Etacs that has remote locking built in......

Kieron ( Ronniecabers) ... wouldn't make any difference if either was fitted, adding another controller can be done for either..

Lez, I'm on the verge of fitting my alarm with cdl interface. Both front doors activate the locking from the key so I'm thinking it's just case of finding the correct feeds to the drivers door motor with me multimeter, and connecting the interface in there? I'm not that bothered, but as the alarm has it i may as well use it.
