Ah CB had one years ago in fact still have my AM set in garage!! Thinking of getting back on, is it still as popular as the 80's?

did have warrior, but crossed over to disco 2.

No only a handful on the air nowadays and most of them are halfwits, most of the decent folk migrated to amateur radio which still quite active but nowhere near its 1980's peak as tin'ternet social media has largely replaced radio.
CB radio's are still very handy though for off road communications, AM is still popular in Europe especially Italy, but your unlikely to get anyone in the UK.

There are several places that do starter kits, thunderpole are a decent company

You will be able to pick the stuff up cheaper on eBay or gumtree but it can be a leap of faith as to whether the rig works or not.

I'd think its essential safety kit for anyone doing lanes or pay and play also good for banter and chit chat enroute, don't buy a hand held though, their shite

Looking at the kit (Thunderpole kit £85 all in) like woody I'm on a budget to get rust bucket on road for Kirton, but they do advise on site to have one if you can cos it's a big site.

You need....

TTi TCB 550, under £50 if you ferret around.

A 3/8"'DV mount, comes with cable.

A Thunderpole Springer antenna, the big one.

About £75 all in, maybe less if you shop around. You could try a cheaper used cb but this is fraught with risk.

BTW, AM is now legal in the mids only at 4W and SSB on the mids at 12W PEP, but you must use an approved rig. UK40 is still 4W FM only.

The old 27/81 is still the most Used band. Depends where you live, but living in the country sandwiched between 2 large towns its moderately busy. Some chumps,.but some decent users too.

27/81 is fine as this is the legal 40 fm band, which is still in use, almost all fm CB's are built on the same cybernet board so don't waste money buying one with bells and whistles and don't spend money on on with AM as its not used much in the UK
