Speedo issue

#1 by Marty03 , Thu Sep 25, 2014 10:11 pm

Hi all, the mileometer stopped working the other day. It started clicking which made the needle jump, then stopped making the noise. The end result is the speedo works fine, I'm just not clocking up any more miles... I reckon a tab has broken off a reel after siezing.

My question is- Once I remove the clocks to investigate, am I able to remove to fix or replace the number reel?

But if you want to fix it i think another speedo will be necessary.

I tried the reset button for the trip, but no joy.
I will get hold of an old cluster to strip down and swap the reel, if this is possible. It looks like it is held in by 2 screws in the pictures I've seen
Has anyone done this before?

No more peedo comments please.😄

I got an old instument cluster off an internet auction site. It turns out it was quite easy to strip down, and the odeometer comes out easily.

I will do a how to soon, in case anyone else needs to do this in the future.

Hi, I've also had an old problem with my speedo. I finally got round to getting my mechanic to replace the unit with one i got off ebay but the problem is still there. Its a squealing type of noise that increases with speed and changes now and again, sometimes quite loud and when it gets worse the needle jumps to mirror the sound. Could it be the cable? or is there anything else that might cause it? Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Cable is ya likely suspect Dave, get the clocks out and dribble some thin oil down the middle...even sunflower / cooking oil will do.... Unless you're old enough to have some 3 in 1...

Thanks for the replies. Its a 2001 L200. The mechanic said he gave the cable a good greasing, i think he said grease rather than oil.

lezs way is the easiest to grease it you may have to pull the inner out
3 in 1 will just glide down if you squirt it in from the top

Wouldn't i be better just replacing the cable seeing as I'm getting him to take it apart anyway?

Dave, yes mate a replacement would be far better, lubing it could well solve the issue though, as Lee says, pull the inner and grease it all the way through..
A speedo cable has not very much to go wrong to be honest and the only problem normally is for them to break..
Have a good look at the route of the cable through the cab, I've never changed one, so couldn't say how easy it is to do.

No problem Dave,
I'll let you know what I find when I pull mine. The clocks I stripped were a donor set bought off EBay.
I'm just waiting on some bulbs to arrive in the post, then I'll be ready to start the job.
