Turbo Whistle

#1 by tree climber , Mon Nov 03, 2014 4:27 pm

Hi all,
Sorry if has been asked before but I'm new to the site.
I have a 2006 new shape L200 4life double cab. Since I've owned the truck it makes a weird sound from the turbo which I can only describe sounds like as a police siren? Its quite bad when the engine is cold. Then it doesn't seem to be as bad when warm but you can still hear it.. I've checked the fan on the turbo and it seems fine, there are no obvious holes in the pipes. Is this bad? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

ED

Turbo whistle or turbo whine? Is it there all the time or only when you change gear? What air filter do you have?

I think its when the turbo kicks in.
I'm not sure what air filter is in it but I can check and let you know.

Have you had your manifolds off? sounds like a split pipe or a loose gasket if it isn't the turbo spindle

could it be a loose belt that slips as the revs increase ?

I'll have to check the above. Its weird as it sounds like a siren when the turbo kicks in. I've done it with the bonnet up and its really loud. It feels fine to drive with no loss of power, its just annoying to hear it.

Thanks for your answers.

Hi Krutly,
I've just been and checked and it makes no difference if the air con is on.
What I did notice is when I hold my foot down on the throttle the note stays the same. When I start to release my foot off the throttle it changes note. Hence the siren sound.

Hope this helps

Cheers,
Ed

Is there anyway you can record the sound in video and post on here?

When you go to Post reply ( not quick reply ) , at the bottom is attach file, thats where I do it for photo, never done a video but guessing the same. CAn see no problem with posting a video per se , as others have done so to identify sounds etc

It's hard to tell on a recording whether the volume is worryingly high or not. On my classic the tubby is just barely audible while driving with the radio and heater fan switched off.

Might be a leaky pressurised pipe from the turbo alright.... can you feel any air blowing about or try to pin it down to a specific part of the engine bay?
Or could be a wrecked bearing in something like your alternator. Are all your belts tight but not too tight?

Hi, Thanks for your answers. Its recently had a big service. I believe all the belts are fine but can't be 100% sure. I've tried pin pointing where the noise is coming from but its very difficult. Any ides where the best place to take it in the Worcestershire area?

Cheers,

Ed
