Starter motor problem

#1 by surfer , Mon Dec 01, 2014 5:51 pm

Tried starting the truck this morning and it wouldnt
Tapped the starter and it fired up first flick of the key
What would be sticking and need cleaning?is it the part that has the cog on the end in the small housing that fits into the bell housing
Or am I better off getting a new starter

Many thanks in advance

Al

Ps please hurry up with YA answers as I will do it tonight

It's more than likely the solenoid on top of the starter that's sticking , not sure if you can strip and clean them

If the bit on the end was sticky ( STOP IT !!!) then the starter would spin but not turn the engine, the solenoid on top, normally can be removed and cleanes as its likely this that is causing the issue, the one piece that you can't clean (without some further dismantalisation) is the contact bar ( fat copper thing) at the front of the solenoid that actually passes the power to the motor bit of the starter..

Fitted mine tonight - in the dark with a headtorch.

It was a pain, struggled to hold it in place to get the bolts lined up to get them started in the thread.
