Fuel problem

#1 by Stottie , Thu Dec 18, 2014 11:18 pm

Hi Folks
Having a fuel issue with my 2001 l200
Problems when starting, i think there is a pin hole on pipe on tank
It had fuel lines replaced before i got it
I have a Facet pump lying in garage, can i fit this as a stop gap until i get time to inspect the problem properly

Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) stick your return and feed pipes both in a gallon of fuel from the filter summit like the pic if it starts straight away you know its coming from further down the line and use proper fuel clips not jubilee clups coz i got wrong for doing that i had to sit on the naughty step for a week

Its definetly further down the line, fuel is running back down the line
Winds over for ages to get fuel up before it starts
very hard on battery, thats why i wanted to fit electric pump if it was possible

Could it be a stack pipe issue?

Try a non return valve just before fuel filter.

If you put the valve just before the filter then it should start straight away as the fuel will be at the pump ? ?

Put the valve BEFORE the fuel filter (as in from the tank ) and then your filter and lines to pump will be full of fuel and primed. If fuel is still running back then the leak is somewhere between filter and tank. If it still isnt starting then there is a leak between filter and pump or it is something else that is causing the bad starting

Well, after checking various things it would appear that the fuel pump is Kaput
Have been informed that a seal on shaft goes, thus the starting problems
On a brighter note ( hopefully ) a friend has a scrapped Pajero
Are the fuel pumps the same ? If so, how big a job to change it

@Alan G will definitely be able to tell how to do it. He will be along at some point soon.

Did you get this fixed?

I'm having a bit of a dejavu. Had issues with the Pajero when I got it 7years ago, was a fuel issue that I tried all ways to fix including replacing lines and non return valves. Turned out it was the seal on the shaft in the pump. Part was £12.99 but had to remove pump to fit. The fault was slightly different from yours in that the truck would start ok but not great but 9 times in 10 it would die a set distance from home. Ie 1/2 mile and then would take 30 secs to start again.only when cold though. Fixed instantly with seal.

I now have the L200 and it again has issues similar to yours. Starts ok most times but at others it takes a little while. Mine also hesitates and lurches slightly, not enough to impede performance much but sooooo irritating. This was the first time I had seen the seal in the pump mentioned on the l200 as I thought that was solely on the 2.8. Hope so anyways as was a pain to fit. The plunger on the top of the filter also goes soft after sitting for a while.

Mine did this and it was stack pipes. Your truck is a similar age to mine and these are a known weak point for corrosion. I replaced the stack pipes (milners) and ran flexi fuel hose down the chassis rail to replace corroded fuel lines. It's worth using a dremel or something to cut the securing nuts off the top of the fuel tank as tha captive bolts are highly likely to shear! Hope it's an easy fix
