Train Horn equipped L200!

#1 by Hornstar , Sun Jan 18, 2015 3:59 pm

Hi all, I thought you all might be interested in what I have done to my 54plate L200 in the year I have had it!

I'll bore you from the start with the gory details of how I found the Truck etc etc

Basically it started with my obsessive 8yr un healthy interest in TrainHorns!! Lol. I had bought myself a set of K5 Nathan Airchimes that came off the top of an AMTRAK train in the USA.
I wanted to put them on my Transit connect van, but due to the size & weight of them, they would not have fitted anywhere other than on the top, so the hunt was on to find a vehicle suitable to fit the Horns too.

To try to give you some kind of idea just how big these are, here is the horns sitting intop of my brothers old banger!

I found this one on Fleabay, starting at £3,999 & it was local to me so I arranged to go and see it, purely to look at what space was under the bed, so I could then look for another one a bit cheaper, 4k was not the sort of money I had sitting around waiting to spend.

I will post more as I am only allowed to post 5 pics at a time.........

RE: Train Horn equipped L200!

Anyway , I met the owner of the truck & started looking over it, turns out they were about to have a baby and the truck needed to go ASAP as they lived in some flats with underground parking & they had bought a new car. He told me that he had not had much interest in the truck apart from one bloke who was a dealer & had made a silly offer! I asked what was the lowest he would take & he just said make me an offer. I said I would not be able to offer the sort of money he was asking for & said my best offer would be £2900, he winced and said the other bloke had offered a bit more, but he was a dealer, BUT, as I was genuine & I was going to look after the truck and made me promise I would not flip it over for a quick profit, I could have the truck for £2900.

I was chuffed! I shook his hand and arranged to pick the truck up on the Saturday.
Two days later I collected the truck & he had taxed the L200 for 6mths & had it MOT'd as well, I could not believe my luck when he then even gave me back £100 because he said the tailgate had become stiff & unable to open! He must have been on another planet due to his daughter being born the previous evening.

I drove the truck home smiling all the way!

First job I did was to get the tailgate released, which is when I noticed the hinges were slightly out of line, possibly due to it opening and dropping down suddenly. I realigned the tailgate & nipped up the bolts! Wallah! Perfect again. 10 minutes work for a£100!

The back had a vynl cover to it, so I had a little cheeky look in Fleabay again & found someone selling a BJERG CAP(MOUNTAIN TOP) & brand new roof rack in the box ending in 4hrs. £120 later I had won both items! Next I found a courier who would pick up from Yorkshire & deliver to London for £45, so I booked that as well!
I also listed the near immaculate vynl cover on the auction site and sold it for £55

My next purchase was a set of 600mm 12v Hospital bed electric actuators. I bolted these to two brackets that I fabricated & then drilled the top and bolted the actuator to the rail. Some wiring & a 12v garage door opener ment I now had a rear cover that raises & lowers at the push of a button on a remote control!

You can just make out the actuators fitted on my truck. (Ignore the rest of the picture, it's a customers train horn installation I done at Xmas)

It was at this point I then realised the tailgate was not lockable, so I dropped the handle off and un clipped the metal rods that open the catches. Next I took some small webbing (ribbon) and tied it to a part of the mechanisim and placed it so in case of emergency I could hook it out with the tailgate up & pull it to release, should at any time the actuators fail! Works a treat.

Next it was time to start work on fitting the Horns, which ment relocating the spare wheel, which is now bolted to the back cover.

More to follow............ If your all not about to throw yourselves off the nearest bridge!

Next I had to think about how & where I was going to mount the Horns.
My last truck was a slightly different Hilux which had been lowered and all sorts done to it.

I also fitted Train Horns to it, these were slightly smaller K3's.

Now back to the L200!

I had to do some quite extensive wiring for what I had planned.

Basically I had to run 25mm double insulated meter tails (normally used to feed your consumer unit at home) I had relays & also rats going on

I covered everything in cable dressing to tidy it all up.

Next I had to make up design and build a switch control panel to control the Horns & compressors! I started by cutting out a piece of plastic out of an old drill box!

I planned out where all the switches and gauges were going to go.

Switches fitted for size.

I then bought a piece of car "Wrap & wrapped the plastic.

Now with the wrap on, I had to cut out the holes.

Switches fitted!

I connected it up to test all the LED's

Next I made a plan of how I wanted the stickers to look on the panel.

I connected up & fitted the panel in the centre console.

Next I fitted the stickers I had specially made.

NOTICE THE EJECTOR SEAT BUTTON ESPECIALLY FOR THE MRS! Lol lol lol

The last picture shows the reverse cameras screen I fitted on the truck,
I now have a pop out DVD player which I then connected up the front & rear parking cameras to, proper handy for them tight spaces.

Right, now for the Horn installation. With the spare wheel removed, I had a play around as to how I was going to mount the Horns. I had to consider they would be theft proof as to loose £800's worth of Train Horns would be somewhat sickening! Lol

My first thoughts were to mount them facing backwards.

I decided as I wanted to get maximum noise out of the Bells, I should fit them pointing down, so I set about bolting them the the truck bed?

I removed the now redundant spare wheel winder system & then started cleaning up the chassis rails ready to paint & tidy up.
The Horns are bolted through the floor, using coach bolts, two up & two down so the Horns cannot be removed without opening the back up.

Next I had to fit the 8.5gallon tank and compressors. The tank got bolted beautifully up the the floor at the very rear of the underside & the compressors went on the chassis rail.
The tank has a built in pressure release valve, drain cock, pressure gauge electronic sender, PCL air line connector (great for blowing up tyres, mattresses & blow up dolls!)

I coated the underneath with a quick spray with some hammerite black paint, just to tidy it all up a bit, and then fitted the solenoids! There are two Solenoids as I have two sets of Horns going on the Truck.

Next I had to pipe it all up using 1/2" pipe. There is one pipe going to the K5's manifold direct & another going to the Shocker manifold which then reduces the pipe size down, the the Shockers. (Shockers are manufactured by HornBlasters.com in the States & exceptionally loud as well!)

Some more cable dressing on the cables.

In the picture above you can see the Shockers sitting behind the K5's.
I had to make up a bracket to carry the Shockers.

The K5's run at about 152dB & the Shockers are 148dB, both running at 150psi!!!

My next acquisition was to find myself a suitable private plate for the truck, my Hilux had the plate K3 OHRN and when I saw this one below, I simply had to have it!

I think that's about it for now.

Oh apart from I am sorta half way through fitting Train Horns to the wife's smart car, but that's another story for another day lol lol
(It will be the LOUDEST Smart car in the UK)

Did I mention the Horns can be operated by 100ft remote control or from two buttons inside the truck either side of the handbrake? Lol

Nahhhh they kinda got used to me, although I don't let them off within a 5mile radius of the House! Apart from the one time at 2am in the morning when I sat on the remote control! It launched me into orbit! I had to run round the house turning all the lights off! I now don't keep the fob for the remote control on my bunch of keys!!!

One of my mates often rings me to see where I am as he can hear me in the distance lol, one time especially I was about 4miles from his house & he heard me!!
