4WD engagement and dash lights

#1 by thebigredfox , Thu Jan 29, 2015 2:47 pm

Guys
I've driven through a few puddles at the side of the road and each time afterwards the lights for the 4WD in the dash blink on the front wheels.
When I slow and come to a stop it sounds as if something has tried to engage but didn't make it and there's a droaning noise as the truck comes to stop - if I move the stick shift to 4WD then back out all is ok again, sometimes until the next puddle.

Is it water getting to a connector or a solenoid of some kind?
Pointers would be great, cheers

The truck is a 2011 Long bed, thanks

Adam

Have you used the 4wd before? Mine gets used a lot, we used to bave a 300 didco that wouldnt do 4wd because apparently it had not been used before. Sounds like the actuator has a problem, or maybe vac pipes?

Did they not change the location of the actuator from 2010 onwards? Sure I heard its hidden away now? @Basil Might be be wrong?

Dunno, wouldnt have thought there was a reason for moving such a thing?

Thanks guys for the recent replies.
I did think about the connectors needing packed out with maybe trucklite grease or similar.

I'm in 2 wh when it happens and it only does it when I go through a puddle at the side of the road.
The 4wd lights flash on the dash and you get a droaning noise as you stop at the next junction - it then needs 4wd engaged then disengaged to correct it.

I'll get under it and pull the plugs and clean and pack them.
Cheers guys

Adam

My old shape 56 plate does the same did you find a cure ???? does anyone else know wot it is all about ????

re-cap 2wd on the road going slow , 4wd light flashes droning noise and a slight clunk as you stop .... as soon as I pop in and out of 4wd it clears it.

@ChrisM0ZCP

Get under the truck ( drivers door ) , look towards the front of the truck , by the gearbox you will see a rubber ' bellows ' , pull this back and give the rod you can see a damn could dosing in something like wd40, put it back together .....do it again a couple of days later... Should cure it .. Its the 4wd actuator trying to engage that you can hear , mine did it , and what I have described cleared mine, took a bout a week before it stopped completely though...... Other than that you will have a vacuum leak. Give that a try and report back in a week

OK got under truck couple of days ago and sprayed 3in1 oil on the shaft inside rubber "bellows" and both ends where it goes into ?????? ( this was more connected to the front diff than the gear-box and was facing left/right not lengthways ) I also sprayed 3 near-by electrical outlets that look like feeds from sensors.... it cured the groaning sound with a clunk as you stop , but the 4WD light still either flashes or is on solid when in 4WD .

Whilst under there I asked mum to flick in & out of 4WD the sound this made was way back at the rear of the gear-box .... but with the engine on that shaft had a slight movement ( put my hand on the rubber bellows whilst Mum did 4WD again).

All in all the 4WD works..... goes in and out smooth as silk..... I just need to go over a magic bump to knock it all the way out so the light stops flashing

OK the above was 18th May its now 31st
Right then the story so far... the grinding noise is all but cured , just after the spray oil treatment on about 15th within 10 miles of rural driving the grinding totally stopped BUT the 4WD is still flashing , The other day I was hopping in & out of 4WD more than normal ( for work ) the light did stop flashing and go out but as soon as I started dawdling ( driving below 25mph ) it stated groaning as B4 maybe not as loud , not done it since though hopefully a one off it stil just goes along quietly flashing the whole time.

For the light to still be flashing you probably have a vacuum leak, some of found small blockages, others have just replaced all the pipes, and sometimes in the vac tank with pinholes of rust ....
