Is a bang , hiss , whistle or some other type of noise...I've never had an issue but a description of the noise might help with diagnosis...

Was just wondering if the sound you were hearing was the 4 wheel drive ' plunger ' trying to engage and disengage, as that makes a grinding sound and is usaully related to a vac problem...

First thing I'd do is lubricant the plunger... The plunger is located under the truck by the gearbox....if you lie on the floor by the drivers door and look towards the engine you should see a ' bellows ' like rubber gator, pull this back and spray a lot of wd40 in there...

Without being to up front, I would link to various topics on the main forum , but until your a full member I can't, It's free to join so...

Or is it something not making that work

just lube it up , and refit , drive it fore a couple of days and see what happens...I know i said I hadn't come across an issue with grinding gearbox, but the plunger trying to engage I have come across, and just sprayed it and the problem went away...may just have been luck I suppose, but the plunger is operated by vacuum...get yourself joined up and I can link you to the topics we have had going about vacuum and plunger.....
