Help please

#1 by wirvine88 , Thu Jun 04, 2015 8:28 pm

Hi all,
I bought a 2005 old shape l200 a couple of weeks ago but it has just started overheating! It does the usual overheats then the temperature comes back down again then is fine for a bit then overheats and cools down. I have removed the egr valve and cooler, and noticed I had lost a bit of the coolant since buying the truck but no signs of a leak :-(
please can someone reccomend a mechanic near yeovil or taunton in somerset to get it checked out.
Many thanks
Will

Get it up to temp and put your hand all over the radiator. Make sure it has no cold spots on it and that it's not blocked. Check the viscous fan is working. Should be able to stop it with a rolled up newspaper when the engine is cold. But not when it's hot. Take the thermostat out and boil it in a kettle and make sure it works. With the engine cold take the rad cap off and you should be able to see a flow of water. ( to check the water pump)
Just a few checks do do before paying for these checks at a garage.
Does it just overheat under load or anytime??

Hi if you do a search for over heating,it will give you all the info you need.ie rad cap rad airlock but it normally in the end it is the head or head gasket.

Thank you for the replies so quickly, I will do those checks, I looked at the water with the rad cap off but couldn't really see it moving is it fairly obvious?
The temperature creeps up under heavy load but falls when still accelerating just not as hard.
There is almost a wining noise under heavy acceleration, could this be the water pump?
I don't really have the time to do much work on the can so would like to take it somewhere as previously trying to do it myself has taken longer, cost more and my old t4 still blew up

Before you leave it at a garage to be worked on.get a mobile mechanic to do a sniff test. When my truck started overheating occasionally i saved myself hundreds of pounds with this simple test. Turned out my thermostat was faulty, hopefully yours is something equally simple and cheap.

Thank you for your replies, unfortunately due to work I have only just been able to look at the truck. I have taken the rad cap off with the engine running and it was quit lose so will replace with a new one soon. I looked at the water level and the colour is quite a dark brown but can't see it moving across. I pumped the lower hose and lots of debris floated to the top and could see a bit of movement of the water, after a couple of minutes this stopped.
Does this sound like broken water pump?
thanks
Will

Almost certainly a leaking seal on the rad cap. The pressure the cap causes raises the boiling point of the coolant and allows it to run at over 100Deg without actually boiling away... when the rad cap seal is shyte the pressure will build up and then escape via the seal causing boiling and temp rise, pressure drops and the whole process starts again..

Thanks lezt, should I see the water flowing though past the rad even if the seal is broken on the cap? I had the cap off from starting cold and allowed the temp to rise. Is that's right? Sorry I don't really get vehicles!

Not really mate the flow is down rather than across... allowing the temp to come up with the cap off will only mean that the thermostat was likely not open yet..so deffo no flow..Grab yaself a new cap around £7 from memory..
