Hi all, I have recently bought a 02 l200 with full service history and only 100k miles. last week i was driving home on a duel carriage way @70mph when the engine blew up and spat the con rod through the side of the block wrecking the engine. I am now having a new engine fitted and was wondering if 70mph in an L200 is to fast?
The truck seemed to be reving really high (3500rpm) for 70mph is this normal and are the engines built to take this punishment?
PS.
I had no warning the engine was going to blow and was running perfectly. I had a small drop in power then a few seconds later a rattle and before i could pull over onto the hard shoulder a massive bang and bye bye engine.
Not that common to spit conrods out....
70mph is the upper end I'd want to take a classic , I have had mine higher , but I could visibly see the fuel guage dropping! What you have to remember is its a nearly 2 ton truck with the aerodynamics of a brick, so revs will be a little higher , most of us on here try not take our trucks over 3000rpm . The thing with the engine in the L200, is its based on an old 1970's 1.6 petrol engine , bored out over the years to become what it is today......
I think, personally , for a conrod to go , you have been unlucky!

Many Thanks, I have managed to secure a new engine which is being fitted as we speak, just dont want it to happen again.
I have been told that a possible cause for the high revs and total engine failure is, it could be chipped. is this a known issue with the 2.8 lump?
didn't know the 2.8's were chipped.............

Sorry i meant 2.5 turbo. and the chip is I believe an aftermarket mod.
ah right .... plenty of the 2.5's are chipped without throwing conrods out of the engine.....

Thanks Ronnie.
I now feel a little better about spending £1500 on a new engine.
think i may of scared myself a little seeing all the problems associated with the L200 although mine is in mint condition doesn't stop me from worrying.
In 5th gear your revs would 3000rpm at 70mph running 265/70/16 tyres. so i would think something is a miss at 3500rpm

I have had mine at 80 a few times and it seems more than comfortable at that speed..mine has the mitzi power upgrade fitted.im not a speeded but on occasions I have hit 80 overtaking etc..it's very unusual,if not unheard of to have these throw the Conroe throughout the block..the earlier navaras were famous for it,but not these..tbh,and I think most will agree, the classic engine ( 4d56) is pretty much bomb proof.

Hi mate , you may have created a land speed record for a Classic ,80 mph !
Mind the weight of these trucks ain't like a car in stopping distance.I wouldn't go down the line that these engines are bomb proof though with good regular service and maintainance they should run and run.
