New shape timing belt

#1 by mikeb1986 , Sat Nov 28, 2015 9:12 am

No write up on it as far as I can see?

I appear to have a snapped balance belt I am now stripping down to investigate and if I am replacing will write up.
I am looking at the online workshop manual and have a couple of quick questions

What needs to come off? the manual shows the glow plugs out... Is that just to make it easier to turn over or is there a reason they have to come out

Balance belt - do people leave these off on this engine?

Tools/Parts - Anything other than a belt/pulley kit from milners? I have threadlock, sealant, degreaser, torque wrench etc.

It turns out the balance belt is still in place. It has had all the teeth stripped off it. I assume one balance shaft is seized up and i've been lucky not to snap the belt. What are people opinions assuming this is the case? Replace the shaft? Remove the shaft or leave it in and without the belt?

What is involved replacing the balance shafts if it comes to it?

It would be good to see a full wrote up with pictures on this. Mine needs doing and I read the workshop manual but it didn't fill me with much confidence.

If its a seized balance shaft I would just leave that belt off.

Turns out neither shaft is seized or the tensioner so I can only assume the belt was very old or just a bad belt.

I'm having to give the write up a miss though. Had to push it round to garage to get the to finish it I wont have time and I need it at the weekend. They've agreed just to carry on where I left off and charge me for what they do
Its easy enough to strip down, air intake pipe, fan cowling, fan, drive belt and tensioner, AC belt and tensioner, crank pulley, timing covers off. Looks a pain to time up without having the radiator and grille off though.

:-( think I may have to wait until next summer and give myself a few days to finish. Knowing me I'll get halfway in before I realise I've not got a certain tool and no way of driving to go and buy one!
