steering wobble

#1 by CAS , Thu Mar 22, 2012 7:45 pm

My steering wheel had a gentle wobble when driving. At pretty much any speed (20mph up to legal limit ) If you gripped the wheel tight, you could hold it steady, that's how gentle it was.

Turned out that the Steering Idler Arm had play in it. Bought a new one, replaced it. Job is a good 'un Wobble gone.

Sorry, forgot to take notes and pictures when my neighbour was doing the work

But, undo 3 bolts (holding nuts at the back), undo castle nut, separate, install new one.
It's on the N/S, behind the front wheel (full lock to the left and you can see it)
Here's a picture I got of t'internet:

To be honest, it would have been easy enough to do it myself, but a bit pressed for time at the moment. And he is a mechanic and does a lot of my servicing.
I have a jeep as well, I do all the work on this myself, because it doesn't matter if it is off the road longer than planned

tip - spray it with grease - the top silver cap will rust like a b4st4rd otherwise, oh and keep it greased - thats what nipples are for (gulp)

How much play was there in the old idler? I have the very same issue.ive got a bar in the gap on the main body.theres a tiny amount of play but I don't know what's acceptable?.however, car was not raised when checking so could be worse I suspect.

When Miss Fielder replaced mine (with Diggerman Dan's guidance) we found little in the way of play wit the idler arm, It was more the sheer lack of resistance. If you held the new one and tried to move it by hand it took quite a bit of force. If you held the old one you could move it left and right with ease.

The worst bit is when the idler has been there for so long, it rusts/seals/sticks/bonds to the steering rod. If this happens, cut the idler off above the rod and press it out using a clamp and a socket. Happened to me and caused many the curse to be uttered
