Classic head bolts

#1 by Marty03 , Mon Jan 18, 2016 9:38 pm

Just a quick one.

I just got some auto data for the looming head gasket change on my 53 plate truck, and noticed that it says head bolts don't have to be changed. After searching this job on here and other sites, it's apparant that most change them.

I trust Auto Data, but wouldn't like to mess up. What do you guys think about this?

Thanks for the fast reply bud.

For my year the torque is 29 Nm then 120 degrees. Would this stretch them?

Yeah, it surprised me. The classics from 97 to 01 are torqued down to 123Nm in 3 stages.

Is the 120 degrees not a third of a full turn? I'm sure that's how Al does them.

You could make up a cardboard triangle then travel from one corner to the next corner.Gotta work if it's a triangle.

Always change head bolts. For they they cost and how much your spending on the job it's not worth re using them. A snapped head bolt in the block is a proper kick in the bollocks.
Only pennies for a gauge.

dont trust the angles , can't remember who , but I remember someone saying they didn't seem to go tight enough, I used 30 , 80 , 120 when I did mine as that was what I was recommended to do

just tip ex or paint pen all at 12 o'clock then turn it till its at 4 o'clock
and if you mark the head /collar/side of the bolt you can see it with the socket on the bolt. ;)

I re used some the other day on the Forktruck at work and snapped a head bolt in the block. Just cos I wa trying to save coin. U can in theory re use them. Just make sure you notch the bolts so u know how many times you use them. They're stretch bolts in these engines so if you keep using the then they get metal fatigue. I didn't know how many times those Forktruck bolts had been reused so stupid of me not to change them really. My own fault.
