DID balance shaft belt

#1 by s1rally , Sat Jan 23, 2016 2:20 pm

Hi fellas
Got round to doing my belts today on my new shape, mileage is 130k I found the balance shaft belt snapped. Checked both shafts for play all good so fitted new belt. I know from having classics previously they were bad for shaft bearings but is there any issues on the common rail engine shafts? I have had the truck around a month now and thought it ran fairly smooth but with the new belts on its noticeably smoother on idle than before.

It's the first new shape I've heard of with a snapped balance belt!

Was the belt still there or just missing?
If it was missing could be a chance it weren't fitted a last belt change

I think its just been down to neglect as the shafts felt free with no play, Im just home after a 60 mile run with no issues so fingers crossed.

Mine didn't snap but it stripped all its teeth. It had been rattling for a while and I couldn't figure out what it was and gave up on it. A few months ago it got a lot worse and ran really rough, I looked thinking the balance belt had snapped it was still in one piece but literally no teeth on it. Think the rattle had been a "bald" spot on the belt all along. No seized bearings, shafts, bad pulleys or anything. New belts on and it runs noticeably better for it. Garage reckoned they were original belts as they were genuine Mitsi ones. (56 plate, 98k)

Looks like we had a couple of close calls Mike. Mine too were genuine Mitsi belts id like to think they werent the 1st set put on it at 130k .
Your truck will be running smoother now your balance shafts are in sync.
