Fuel pump refurb

#1 by Jon Grimsby , Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:35 pm

Has anyone had a pump rebuilt and can recommend a good place for me to have one done, I really want to sort my starting problem so am thinking of buying a 2nd hand pump (has anyone got one kicking about FBW) and having it refurbed so I can do the job with a belt change etc in the spring.

I had mine done at Power Drive in Portsmouth. But that's a fair way from you. Find a diesel specialist near you and start researching them for reputation. I would think that's the best route. Power drive down here are used by a lot of other mechanics and you regularly hear them spoken well of. So it was a no brainier really. Not cheap though. £350 for a basic overhaul and up from there. On mine only the casing was useable and it came in at £650. Still cheaper then a new one though.

What is the problem with the starting ?
is it not just the front seal ?

Diagnosed as fuel temp sensor and fuel timing sensor which are both inside the pump.

That's good then. I've obviously missed that you have a firm diagnosis. Just got to get it fixed then.

I had it plugged in at a local indie, code 14= temp sensor, code 43= timing control system. I will look at getting it done in the spring sometime, hoping to find a cheap spare pump that I can get refurbed and do the whole job the same day rather then strip it all out and have to wait for the pump to be done.

are u sure the sensors are actually fooked and not the wiring and multi plugs that connect them all? all too often it is the cables where they go into the plugs

I have had a good look around there mate but all seems ok, I also cleaned the block connectors and greased them, it does seem likely though as it dosnt always do it, mind you if it was that it would do it when hot and cold as well wouldn't it. I will have another look when am off shift next week.

No good just looking I have seen it where the wires have broken inside the insulation just where they enter the plug if that makes sense. U won't visually see it.
