Ian, did a total rebuild, and then killed an end shell after 3k miles, picked it up and spun it, guessed possible rod damage from previous so renewed all 4 rods reground crank reshelled and renewed oil pump, around 3k more did the same again, cannot see what I have missed as I did every bearing and seal, cleaned it all through, both times. I was missing something but couldn't see what so I just outed the lump and got a replacement one from a low mileage.

Both times was after / during a long run, one of my trains of thought was a partially blocked oil cooler, it must be fed directly after the oil pump and will be the first in line from there , if the cooler was semi blocked then when on a long run, the pressure from the oil pump would slowly build up and would starve the crank etc of oil, when the pressure relief valve opened, I think it just returns the oil to the sump, this would give me the starvation on a long run... but I'll never know.. well I replaced the cooler with the engine anyway..

never worked on an L200 full strip, have done many others though, are the rods sided lez ??, reason i ask is ive come across a few that are not marked front and have been put in reversed, from that the locating tab on the shells then because the engine direction was then pulling with the locating wedge rather than against it had caused the shells to spin within the eye as the rotational friction caused the wedge to distort back to the shells radius

Rods are marked, as are the pistons Mike, that was my thought first time round.

not first time ive heard about shells spinning in journals on these motors, makes you wonder if the outer shell casing is faulty, is the tab on each shell still there lez or has it sheared off ???

First time they had been run back into the shell as they spun, not even taken this one apart to find out..

strange that lez, sounds like they are fitted back to front as the tab end should go with the direction of rotation, that way the tab locks the shell against rotating, in the opposite direction the two `wedges` or the tab and cutouts can if the shell moves force the tab back to the diameter of the journal, obviously you would need to pull the old motor down to see if thats the case this time, on oil starvation you should see evidence of it in discolouration of the steel part of the shell and usually that the lead alloy material is melted which often ends up in the oil holes in the crank

hopefully your ` new` engine has cured the issue

Both halves of the bearings have tabs on them. Both tabs are fitted on the same side.
So, even though both rods and pistons are marked it should not really matter which way they are installed with regard to crank rotation as the tap on the top bearing stops it rotating in one direction and the bottom one stops it in the other.

Also, I think we are talking about rod bearings here, not main bearings. In that case the bearings are required to rotat in one direction on the downward stroke and reverse on the up stroke.

They will be under more load on the combustion stroke but, as they have to work in both directions, they should last a bit longer than 3k even if fitted backwards

well whenever you get a free weekend come down to my place, nice campsite right next door.
Send the wife and kid's to the safari park just down the road and you can spend all weekend taking engines apart for me!

Do it for ten weekends in a row and I might let you put part of one back together again! (oil filter or something)

The internal combustion engine is a simple device and hasn't changed much in principle for the last hundred years or so. It is just the ancillaries added to make it run that have complicated the issue.
