turbo setup 03 l200

#1 by Oldbilly , Mon Aug 01, 2016 2:31 pm

I have been reading the turbo setup and fully understand how it works, I have no experience of driving another L200 so I have nothing to compare it too, the engine runs fine but runs out of steam a bit at 3k revs and I have to change to the next gear I have checked the turbo spindle and its fine with no play on inspecting the actuator rod when not running the spindle is about 4/5 mm from the lower screw, if I push the spindle it moves back further almost to the lower screw but you can feel it catches on something inside the housing as its pushed back, on further inspection the spindle has quite a bit of play in the bush on the housing, if I use a vac gun on the actuator it rests on the top screw remove the vacuum and it drops back to 4/5mm from lower screw has anyone else had this problem, could I buy just the housing or does this come with the turbo?

must be 70mph

The actuator arm should be resting on the bottom screw when switched off, is the bottom screw set a the right length? check all your vac pipes for splits.

No vac leaks, just been for run, speed at 3k revs,
1st 15mph
2nd 25mph
3rd 40mph
4th 55mph
5th 70 mph
On driving tonight the truck seems to run better? on arriving back home the engine now idles at 1200 rpm (always idles at 800) so gave a quick rev and dies to 800 rpm idle with the engine stopped the spindle on the turbo housing was resting on the lower adjuster screw which is correct, started it and stopped it again the spindle was resting on the adjuster screw as before, very strange as this morning it would not do this, I'm still think this is severe wear on the turbo flap spindle that's causing the problem, any thoughts on the problem welcome.

Mine often won't return back to the lower stop ( 2002 classic fbw) I'm pretty sure with mine it's carbon buildup in the turbo due to loads of short runs , this clears if I do a run of over 100 miles . The variable vane turbos do wear inside and the vanes stick , this seems common with vw turbos , not so sure if the high idle would be caused by the turbo as its all controlled with the ecu ( I will stand corrected if I'm wrong ) . If you can get hold of a boost gauge that's the best way to set up the turbo you don't have to fit it just tape it to the plastic panel by the wipers so you can see the dial while driving

thanks for the replies, when I get time I will remove the turbo housing and have look, it could be carbon build up or the worn spindle causing the intermittent operation.

well, I've adjusted the boost screw on the turbo about 3mm and it revs to about 3200/3300 revs before running out of breath, no EML so will monitor it for a while and go from there.

As the turbos getting old it will be less efficient. So adjusting it will help. Give it some more boost. Will keep the EGT's down as well.

agreed! I've adjusted the boost screw a bit more this morning and it drives much better although the turbo itself is in good condition its the variable vane that seems to be the problem I have seen replacements on ebay for about £70 has anyone installed one?
