#1 by off-roadsaffa , Sat Aug 13, 2016 10:21 pm

Hi All

My starter motor decided to stay engaged and went pop, with alot of lovely electrical smoke, have ordered a replacement, was wondering if there is any hidden info i need or is it a straight forward strip out and replace? 2007 animal new shape

Thanks

Be either dodgy actuator or the fork inside getting stuck. If you've got a new starter and solenoid then all should be fine again. Just check that there is no power to the starter actuater after the truck is started. Making sure the solenoids not held on.

Yes, I disconnect the small cable, fitted a 12v bulb , turned the ignition on and too the start position then back to on, light bulb comes on and stays on

The small wire won't go straight back to the ignition bud. It will come off a relay in ur fuse slash relay box doodad. There's a proper name for the box somewhere in the dictionary. More than likely the relay will be sticking on. Try finding out which one it is and swapping it first. Before spending hard earned wonga at the garage.

When you do find out which one it is you should be able to hear or feel it click on and off if u get somebody to turn the key.

So turns out after alot of head scratching and proper testing, loose connection in the fuse box for some reason causing the relay to stay on and feed the coil with 12v , fixed the connection, tested 12v switching on and off with the ignition. Job done , well so i thought connected cables, fired it up, same noise, starter motor still not engaging....... long story short starter motor off 3 times , then saw the gear sits 5mm further out than old one, so even when retracted still engaged......wrong starter motor 😩😩
