Towing...

#1 by SPT28 , Thu Oct 06, 2016 1:40 pm

Had a search but can't see it covered.

My query mainly relates to a 2004 classic. For those that tow, do you have an 'audible notification' fitted that kicks in when using indicators while towing a trailer? or do you just rely on the dedicated system that seems to do nothing unless a bulb blows/throws a fault? Is there a warning light on the dash for this or does it flash double speed for example?

Apologies for barrage of questions but have B+E test on Monday and trying to ensure my truck is prepped and legal for towing! Any advice or information welcome.

Cheers

Just fit a buzzer there cheap but make sure you put it in the cab as there not loud so if its under the tub you will barely hear it in the cab
If there is a dedicated light and its not doing anything someone could have wired the trailer lead up differently so would not communicate with the dash indicator

I beleive the legal requirement is for an audible buzzer to sound when trailer indicators are active.
correction edit : a visual indicator is an alternative.

source :

“EC R-48 Lighting & Lighting Devices 1981”

“6.5.8
Tell-tale Operating tell-tale mandatory for front and rear direction indicator lamps. It may be visual or auditory or both. If it is visual it shall be a flashing light which, at least in the event of the malfunction of any of the front or rear direction indicator lamps, is either extinguished, or remains alight without flashing, or shows a marked change of frequency (double speed flash). If it is entirely auditory it shall be clearly audible and shall show a marked change of frequency, at least in the event of the malfunction of any one of the direction indicator lamps.
If a motor vehicle is equipped to draw a trailer, it must be fitted with a special visual operational tell-tale for the direction indicator lamps on the trailer unless the tell-tale of the drawing vehicle allows the failure of any one of the direction indicator lamps on the vehicle combination thus formed to be detected.”

cheers

Thanks for the info chaps, as it happens it wasn't a requirement for what I wanted it for (B+E test) which I passed today with 1 minor (result!). Seemingly on my truck the bit where I would expect to see something has been replaced with the switch for the front spots. Will get something added in the near future.
