Rebuild - major progress today :)

#1 by Yoda , Sat May 05, 2012 7:30 pm

Decent progress today putting the truck back together.

Left to do:
Radiator
Fan Shrouds
Manifolds & Turbo
Connections to head
Rocker cover and gasket
Top up oil
Refill coolant

Maybe a days work. Engine rotated perfectly 3 times after fitting belts and checking the alignment.

So what kind of lift you going for? I been wanting a 1.5 inch body lift for ages as my 2.5 inch lift isn't enough. But with your ball joint spacers and Lez's adjustable shackles I can do 4 inch's without the hassle of a body lift. So I'm just gonna wait for your spacers to arrive then have a set of shackles off Lez and job done.

If i can get away without doing a body lift i will but i do like the extra height though.
Once i get a trial set of spacers then i will see if i can get away with using 1" or if i need the 2" as it will depend on what lift i get when the ball joints are moved to the underside of the wishbones

Thanks George.

By all rights Rich I think we can do a 4 inch lift without a body lift kit. I'm counting on it! Your ball joint spacers are the key! But I suppose it depends how high you are planning on going? After all you did used to drive Lucifer!

as long as the 33's fit with just the suspension lifts then the body lift will just be something extra to make it look better

Depends a lot whether you don't mind bashing and grinding away your bumper and lower body work I think - I don't! I've never truly been able to get definitives about what lift is needed for what size tyres. All I can say is I have 32's and a 2.5 inch lift and it rubs on articulation and compression when off road. So not wanting to bash or cut the poo out of my truck I want at least 3.5 or maybe 4inches. If you're going to be on 33's my gestimate is you would want 5 inches.

on the hilux surf's 4" was enough to run the 33's as they are nearly the same set up on the front end as the l200 but with the old 33's on 15x10 steels with a minus 52 offset i had to trim the front bumper a bit

Exactly. It seems everyone has a different story to give. Though I do think a 5 or 6 inch lift would look damn cool!

Update. Rebuild basically complete. However, left the small heat shield off so had to remove the manifold to get it back on. Thanks to that I didn't fire it up today. Just gotta do the final flush of the heater matrix pipes tomorrow, top up oil, and then go through the coolant refill / start up procedure. Should be an easy day by comparison.

Given that a year ago I wouldn't have had a clue where to begin, let alone had the confidence to give it a try. I'm quite pleased. Learn't a hell of a lot I can tell ya!! After this I doubt ill ever want to use a mechanic again!

Couldn't agree more. Each little task you achieve adds confidence. I'm thinking right, so I've done a top end rebuild which includes belt change and turbo. Other than the gearbox and bottom end that's about as big as it gets! It might have been a major bummer blowing my own head but it sure has built the confidence a lot!
