Help needed with raising front suspension

#1 by Gman2017 , Sat Jan 28, 2017 4:39 pm

Hi.

I'm wanting to raise the front suspension on my L200 Animal 2004 model just wanting to know where I can go to find out how much it's likely to cost for the parts and what I need to be able to do this.

Thanks in advance

You need
17mm socket
17mm spanner

Very easy to wind up the torsion bars, but it limits your downward articulation. Go too far and it really puts your camber out, couple of inches is no problem though. I'm sure you can counteract the camber change by putting one of the ball joints upside down or something

No need to worry about the camber as long you don't flip side of the ball joint. But keep some distance from the Bump stop or it will be a bumpy ride.

If you bars is saggy you may need to re index them.

Wind up torsion bars on a classic

Park truck on level ground and measure all 4 corners from centre of the hub to wheel arch ( you are only doing the rear to check for spring sag , this may be detrimental to end result of winding up the front )
If both front measures are the same great , if not the lower side has to be adjusted more to make it even .
Get out the wd40 and spray the adjuster bolts for the torsion bars , while it's soaking in jack up the truck so both front wheels are off the ground ( if you skip this step and try and do it with the weight on the front suspension the chances are the bolts will snap and drop the truck on you ) now go back to the adjuster bolts and wind them in about 20mm , lower the truck back down and drive it backwards and forwards a couple of times to settle the front suspension down ,measure hub centre to wheel arch again to see how much it has gone up and if it is still even .
About now you will need to cut down the rubber bump stops on the front suspension if they haven't already fallen off to allow for more clearance.
Repeat the above steps until you have the desired amount of lift but do not wind it up to the max or they drive like crap and bounce on the front end .
After this the front camber may be out and also the tracking so get them checked at a garage .
The front cv joint angle is now increased and will wear the joints and split the gaiters quicker , to overcome this fit free wheel hubs to the front so you can disengage the drive shafts when in 2wd .

THIS IS ONLY HOW I DID MINE AND TIPS I GOT FROM PEOPLE , I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE OR INJURY BY FOLLOWING MY GUIDE , ITS FOR INFORMATION ONLY AND NOT THE DEFINITIVE WAS TO DO DO IT AND BASED ON OPINION NOT FACT

Quick guide

shogun sport , not much I can say about it really other than it’s slower than the l200 🤷‍♂️

No disrespect intended but if someone asks how to wind up the torsion bars I wouldn't even mention ball joint flipping.
A ball joint flip is a dangerous diy and should only be done by someone with confidence.
If the torsion bars are wound up to 22" centre of hub cap to under the wheel arch the camber is negligible.

With all the problems a ball joint flip can incurr talking someone through is a mammoth job.
Mine just didn't feel right when I did it, and was glad to put it back to normal.
You had a few probs aswell didn't you @123hotchef
