Oily coolant

#1 by RichTS7 , Sun Apr 23, 2017 8:40 pm

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me with a problem.
Iv got an 05 classic, did a coolant flush about a month ago, at which point the overflow tank filled up as well (with old and new coolant), got told there was no point in emptying it. Now the coolant has gone almost oily black. It's not sludgy at all and no white creamy buildup anywhere in the coolant or oil system.
There hasn't been any overheating. Temp gauge rises as it should to regular level. No dives in performance.
My first instinct for oily coolant would be headgasket trouble but the absence of any other signs has me wondering.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Yep and i still have it. It comes and goes.. sometimes i'll clean it out and the oil will not return for months! I have had this for about 2 1/2 years now with no loss of performance...i still tow with it too. Yes i am probably on borrowed time , even my local garage can't wirk out whats going on! All i do is keep topping oil abd radiator up and i can go months without doing that too. I really cant get my head round what tne problem actually is but my gut feeling is a crack in the head but again i have no overheating, no loss of power , in fact last mot the guys at the garage said it pulls really well , better in fact than a few others they mot!

most people dont do a full flush of the cooling system which includes draining the block thus leaving 1/3rd of the contaminated coolant in the block to contaminate the fresh stuff. they only drain the rad and heater matrix if you are lucky

I wouldn't mind Lee , but local garage have flushed it a few times , well aware of the problem , so pretty sure they have done a ' full ' flush ( but suppose it can't hurt to do it again except the bloody mess! )

Could this be contamination from the oil cooler? (apologies if that's not it's correct title!)

I had exactly the same with my wife's audi tt, and turned out the heat exchanger was leaking oil into the coolant. I found this out after 4 full flushes... no mayo on the oil filler cap or dipstick, but oil residue in the coolant that would eventually start to look like chocolate milkshake.

@123hotchef is a 2009 plate oil cooler air cooled? I know a classic is but is the DiD engine a different layout?

@123hotchef Mrvandangos is a new shape, so he would need to check the layout of the cooler pipes I think

Is there a 'how to' guide on the best way to do that?

Gardening I can do, mechanical stuff I'm no so good at lol

If there's a guide though, then I'd be more than willing to try it
I know its only flushing it out but too be honest its not something I've done before, draining and replacing the coolant yeah not a full on flush though...

I'd rather look like a bit of a prat and ask a stupid question than just blindly assume I knew what I was doing and end up messing something wrong...
(Its one of the few things I've realised as i've gotten older lol)
