Lazy starting problems

#1 by Earlybird112 , Sun Jul 16, 2017 10:40 am

Hi. I'm hoping I can get some opinions regarding my old 98 l200 starting issues. I've recently replaced injection pump and injectors with reconditioned units and solved all previous problems. I've timedthe pump (thanks to heathen for that one)to the best of my ability and improved the idle znd reduced a little smoke. However it cranks several times hot or cold before she fires and I'm sure before all my troubles it was pretty instant. What do other members find with theis? Are they on the button or similar. I'm thinking if I altered the pump timing it may improve but at present it's spot on the gauge and I'm loathe go fiddle anymore.

probably looking at half a dozen. Before i altered the timing a little it was similar but was spluttery on starting whereas now when she fires she runs pretty smooth instantly. Its annoying tho cos this seems to be one trouble after the other at moment

Once it's fired up, if you turn it of and then start it up again does it fire up straight away or do you have to crank it again?

pretty much have to crank her again its not instant . before i did pump timing it ran pretty rough and when i did test it showed 0.99 ! , i reckon my 9 degree mark was nearer 10 so backed off a little on the crank pulley and set the pump dead on 1 so dont think there s much room for improving on that. I reckon i have to live with it and hope it doesnt get worse over time or advance the pump by a mill at a time until it improves. What do u think?. The truck pulls like a train and the revs will rev out smoothly to the red line if i wished so overall pretty happy with it

If it does it every time hot or cold you've prob got a bit of leak back. Give all the hoses and unions another good nip up. And check the washers on the leak off rail.

it appears to be improving so maybe there was a little air in the system still and it gradually going back to the tank. I definitely have a bit of a leak around 2 injectors, i torqued up and used all new washers throughout, however the unions and stuff have been off alot lately so ill get some use out of her then maybe replace new leak off rail and unions etc. My garage always cuts a new seat or something when they do injectors maybe they can do this on here and i can put new washers in again and see how it goes. Job for another day. Meanwhile ill change the battery so it always gets a good spin, is a 70 ah ok or would the bigger 90 be the way to go. Ive no fancy electris , spotlight etc but dont want to skimp for the sake of £50.

Mine was doing similar a while back - turned out to be the starter motor. If you've got visible seeping from the injector seat would say that's the culprit - reseating should sort it. My battery is Yuasa YBX3334 - 90Ah, 700A
