Bump steer problems!

#1 by DaleH , Mon Aug 07, 2017 12:30 pm

Hi all. Looking for some advice. My 05 warrior is getting a lot of bump steer. Even some harsher undulation in the road is tweaking my steering some and it's getting real old real fast. Hoping someone can suggest possible causes.
I have 265/75/r16 bfg at tires on new 16x8 alloys. A 2" body lift and 2" spaced ball joint flip suspension lift fitted with longer spring hangers on the back. New 555 ball joints top and bottom, and new steering box about 6 moths ago, new track rod ends and idler arm unit about 8 months ago. Checked all the joints and no play anywhere. So I'm stumped. The only solution ive come up with so far is to fit a shock from the body to the tie rod as a steering damper. Any input would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Dale

The ball joint flip does give you a little bit of bump steer were you having problems before you flipped the top ball joint. Try flipping it back to standard and see if the problem goes away. When you do mods like this it is always a trade off.

Yeah i had bother with it before the flip. So not sure what's up with it. Kinda want to avoid flipping it back. Was gonna ask you actually, with the flip and torsion bars cranked up there about 35/40mm of difference in height form the back. Back being higher. Is that usual? I made the spring hangers to the specs Alex gave me so don't think there's a problem there

If there is no travel or little travel that could be the problem too.

From the top of the bump stop to where it hits on the chassis is 39/40mm. Best i can measure with a tape

Ah right, that was the bottom stop. Top looks to be about 36mm or so if I take a right angle from the arm

It won't but it will give some travel back to the top arm thus make the bump steer better

Yeah I maxed them out. I knid of suspect my torsion bars have gotten over twisted. When I took the old shocks out they were doing nothing. Totally shot. Theres a spot about 2 inch long at the back of the bars that the paint had flaked off like the metal has moved too much. The rest of the paint on them is fine. That's what makes me suspicious

To 're index u need to just rotate them a spline or 2 one end. To be honest I think 're index them and they will be fine

Oh yeah. They spline into the arm end don't they? Totally forgot about that! Teah that seems like a good option. Way better than new bars!!!

The more you raise the torsion bars the bumpier it will feel

Oh right. Didn't know you could b then for a 05. I'd planned to find a shock with the right amount of travel and make up brackets for it. Do you know where sells the rough country one??
