Pothole triggers Engine Management light

#1 by PorkPie , Tue Mar 13, 2018 8:48 pm

So i drove over a pot hole today, and the traction control thingy (ACT/S) lights came on the dash and kicked on (car felt strange to drive) - so i pulled over almost immediately, also noticed the check engine light had come on. Turned the engine off, waited a minute, then started the engine again. Traction control lights didn't come back on, but the check engine light stayed on. No difference in power/acceleration, so not sure what's going on?

@PorkPie what hotchef is alluding to is get a code reader and plug it in and see what code comes up thats triggering the engine management light. If you have an obd2 compliant reader it should read a series 4/b40/pram . If not get a local garage to plug it in for you and get the code read. You could then post code up here or even ask the garage ( if tvats the route you choose ) to tell you what it means

Ok, thanks for explaining that a bit more clearly.

Today, i got in the car - no check engine light !! However after driving for about half an hour, the traction control lights came on and check engine light came on again, this time the car wouldn't go faster than 20mph. Pulled over, turned the engine off. Waited a minute, traction control lights didn't come back on, but check engine light remains on. Drove off normal (without speed being limited) and after a few minutes, it happened all over again. Actually happened 5 times in about 15 mins. No pot holes, just smooth tarmac.

I don't have a code reader, but am taking it to the garage tomorrow for a diagnostic. Will the check engine light still need to be on for him to know what the problem is? As i'm wondering if it might be off like it was this morning. Are there any code readers that are recommended? A quick look on ebay shows some chinese ones for about £20, are they sufficient?

After reading on here, i think it sounds like it be an overboost issue putting the car in limp mode. I read in a post there is a tutorial somewhere on how to adjust the screws on the turbo yourself, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Can someone point me to it please?

Hi @PorkPie - the turbo adjustment you're talking about is probably regarding the old shape vehicles, not sure if it will apply to yours. Any OBD2 compliant reader should work with your truck. The main difference in the prices is mostly down to the quality of the software that gets bundled with it that lets you make sense of the results. Hope you get it sorted.

based on no knowledge whatsoever .......... I'd suspect ABS sensor or steering wheel squib

that doesn't explain the engine light though I dont think
all will become clear once you have the fault codes

Just come back from the garage having the diagnostics done. With the computer plugged in, it had registered a few errors, but none mentioning overboost. Instead there was a code for a fuel leak (?), and a Dynamic Range Error for both sides - he thought it must be ABS sensor in the rear diff that needs cleaning / resetting.

At least it’s fixed. Why did it need an alternator??

The charge coming from it was too low ( < 13v if i recall). Is it not normal for that to go?
