Cheapo In-Dash Satellite Navigation

In the certainty that I was buying some cheap Chinese rubbish, I risked £50 on a 7" touch screen GPS from eBay. Well, I couldn't be more pleased, it worked straight away, and in English, with the same market leading software you get in a barbarian (iGo My Way). It includes maps of Europe and post code searches which was a surprise as they failed to advertise such an important feature. In fact, it's so good that I decided it had to be fitted behind the dashboard central aperture. There are a couple of tricks if anyone fancies doing something similar.

nah i will stick with my samsung tab, bluetooths to the stereo, receives calls through the stereo and makes them the same way, nav can be voice activated or touch, speaks messages, holds around 40 gb of music currently, reads ebooks, runs multiple nav untilities and quite happily sits on my cup holder and is instantly removable to stop the scrotes pinching it

mates got similar but in a single din sized unit that the screen comes out and up on, same sized screen though, software looks all the world like the stuff in the later L200`s, trouble is on his you need to remove the whole bloody thing to update the software as the usb connection thats on the front wont do it, even via a pen drive, that also opens another can of worms with people who like to be warned of ` safety cameras` you cant update those easily either, again we tried to get it to accept it through the front usb and failed, suppose at fifty green ones it could be worth a punt if you dont have anything else to use

as he says though, as his is also a dvd player he can watch porn on it when the fish aint biting

'cuse the poor quality piccies but you'll get the idea. btw it transmits over fm to the radio so movies, music and navigation directions play out through the speakers.

Could be the upgrade I am looking for as I'm getting a bit bored with playing with the remote tailgate opener, just cannot get the right linear actuators.

How cool is this, as night fell yesterday Werbung: it automatically switched into a mode where the map data was displayed in a soothing blue colour, so as not to flood the cabin with too much distracting light.

I have to 'fess up that it's not fully fitted yet but to be honest, the following heath-robinson method is so solid, I see no reason to change it.

Remove the central binnacle by sliding it horizontally towards the back of the cab; do not attempt to pry it upwards. This will require some force and is best achieved by digging in fingernails by the windscreen and with the other hand grasping on the front and pulling. Look out for the white U-shaped clips which need to be returned to the binnacle if the stay stuck in the dashboard.

Use the binnacle aperture to eyeball the required clearance to get the display bang in the middle, mine was about 2.5mm all round. Using some thinly padded double-sided auto tape, affix a frame to the GPS matching the internal dimensions of the binnacle. Since it's unseen there no need to mitre the corners, as I did but it does help to pre-cut the four strips before attaching.

This is where I get a bit self-conscious as I am recommending gaffer tape, the wide heavy duty silver one with nylon thread reinforcement. Peal off the protective film from the double-sided tape and carefully offer up to the back of the binnacle, making sure it's centralised. With four pre-cut strips of gaffer tape, slightly overlap the back of the GPS and draw it tightly over and attach to the bevel of the binnacle. Go over the corners with another four shorter strips for extra security - you'll be surprised how effective this is and no one will ever know. (I was intending to modify the mounting bracket supplied with the GPS to mate up with the four captive nuts behind the dash but I can't be 4rsed now.)

I needed one of Werbung: these because there is limited clearance to the sides and even then, I hade to shave off a couple of mills from the top of the L-shaped adapter which was fine as no wires were exposed. Send down a probe behind the dash to pull through the USB cable and this can go discreetly above the ashtray or you could scotch lock it to the back of the cigar lighter. Replace the binnacle and enjoy.

no god, i have had w.i.f.e Mk1 and 2, both faulty, first one lasted just over a year, constantly going wrong needing expensive repairs, second one after a few years became a pain and was not interested in taking any scenic routes, now have fian.c.e.e model, lot more stable than previous versions, being a much younger model has much better functions without demanding upgrades and or expensive repairs, to date it only has one drawback - its not that good at transmitting music

Mines a W.I.F.E. III, the looks improved and the reliablity is now 100% W.I.F.E I & II were terrible at reliability, they would be be easily diverted and off up wrong ways every time they went out. I have to be honest that my W.I.F.E III, is terrific, never a moments misshap, and allways 100% true to the required direction.
Anyone who has a reliable W.I.F.E I or II should hold onto them dearly, they are very hard to come by and worth their weight in gold.

I'm still running the W.I.F.E II in mine at the moment. got loads of plus points , they can addapt to your driving style , instantly point out any bad habbits you may have picked up, and offer a "get you home" auto drive function when you've been drinking
also comes with an anti theft deterent as so many people want the latest newests gadgets these days that the earlier versions don't seem as desirable any more ( I'm going to burn in hell for that last one)
