p0093 - Fuel Leak

#1 by PorkPie , Fri Apr 13, 2018 7:47 pm

All of a sudden my car started going into limp mode again. EML on and ABS lights come on, car slows down to 15mph. Got a code reader and it is returning a P0093 - Fuel System Leak Detected (Large Leak) - and since it is not actually leaking fuel from anywhere, i reckoned it must be a pressure drop with the SCV on its way out. So bought a new one of them, fitted it, and the car ran fine for about 15 miles, then started going into limp mode if the road went slightly uphill (which is about every minute around here).

So,
- if changing the SCV doesn't resolve the fuel leak error code, what should i look at next?
- can someone confirm that i've fitted the SCV the right way? After i fitted it i was wondering if i may have put it on the wrong way, or maybe that doesn't matter? Looking down on it, the plug is to the right of the valve (otherwise it can be on the left). There's a bit of a smell of diesel when i lift the hood too.

Ok so I took the scv off again, and made sure i fitted it really tight, especially the bottom allen nut which is a pain to get to. Made sure all the rubber seals and gasket are where they needed to be. No longer have the diesel smell, but it is still happening. Anyone got any pointers? The car is pretty much unusable...

Can someone tell me where the fuel pressure sensor is located, and if it's easy enough for a layman to change?

Had the car in for another set of diagnostics - found many problems, but there was indeed a rusty and leaking fuel tank. Quote for a new one is £699 + vat, i'm looking at ones from scrap yards. Does it need to be one off an identical model, or are all fuel tanks for the l200 the same? For instance, will a fuel tank off a 2013 barbarian fit mine (2006 animal)?

...although i am thinking about whether the ECU would be able to actually detect a leak in the tank?

It probably isn't detecting a physical fuel leak, I would guess that fuel pressure is really low so the ecu has been programmed to report it as a major fuel leak as maybe Mitsi don't think any other reason you can get low fuel pressure

I think @Stuarty1981 had a similar problem and may be able to advise further

0093 is the ecu detecting a fuel pressure difference between 2 points from what i gathered. if the SCV hasn't cured it, its possible that the pressure sensor on the end of the fuel rail might.

in my case, the 0093 turned to 1272 (iirc) which pointed right at the SCV, and when it tripped it flagged up the EML, and the 2 TC lights at the right hand side beside the handbrake light. a contributor to my issue was the tuning box too.

You mention that the tank is rusty, is it possible that its rotten on the inside and blocked your filter? That could cause a pressure differential that might be flagging up with your ECU?

So i had mine at the garage today to fit a new rail pressure sensor / fuel pressure sensor. Once he got the old one off and replaced it with the new one, he said the engine computer came up with a load of errors, resulting in him having to replace the old one to get everything working (without error) again. What would cause this? Is it as simple as the wrong filter? (i did check that i had got the right part, i'd even bought two (one of each type) to get the one that fitted, but seems like it was still not right).

The rusty fuel tank is definitely a possibility, it was actually leaking so the error code was spot on. Have had the fuel tank replaced too.

Have the error codes gone completely now? It is possible that the new rail pressure sensor/fuel pressure sensor may need ' programming ' to the ecu

Usually when you replace the fuel rail pressure sensor/SCV you need to carry out a SQL (Small Quantity Learning) where the engine re-learns the fuel pressures at idle and adjusts the injection system. Usually they run like crap and throw fault codes like no tomorrow without an SQL being carried out. It is unfortunately a Mitsi job or finding someone with the Mitsi software.

Ok, so all went well for a couple of days, but now it's going into limp mode again. I find this is when i let the car idle, for around 15 seconds. This can happen at traffic lights, or as soon as i start the car up, if i don't pull off soon enough. I am getting different error codes: P1275 (which my reader has no information for) and P0089.
Quick recap: had the fuel tank and suction control valve replaced, mechanic attempted to replace the fuel pressure sensor but fitting the new one threw up a load of errors, so he fit the original one back.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you had an SQL done?

When matching the fuel pressure sensor numbers, i have 55P05-01 and MY A and then a part serial number on the original one.
My replacement also had 55P05-01, but then said MY C. Does that make a difference? Do i need to buy one that says MY A on it as well as the top number?
