Batteries....it all went wrong..warning

#1 by Nik Rite , Sat Dec 08, 2018 7:06 pm

I've played with car batteries for years....I was working on mee rib boat taking out the car battery 90amphr. Undoing the negatve with my 12mm combination spanner. Next thing I touched the +ve.....Both welded together. I jumped back as spanner went from red to bright orange in 3 seconds. it was fing glowing...options pretty limited...either dive for cover or kick the spanner off....flying kick, off came the glowing spanner. picked it off with my screwdriver and through it on the ground..shouted to meet mate...he came 15 secs later, and it was still glowing big style. I now have a Halfords life time warranty spanner....blue ...not chrome any more and now s shaped...you have been warned. Nik

Few years ago i was working for a Recovery company, truck battery off a 7.5T on charge.
As i walked towards the time clock to clock off, my bag touched the crocodile clip and spun it around.
The live touched the earth and bang, acid everywhere. Blew a hole in the side of the battery the size of a cricket ball.
Luckily i didn't get much on me, soon wiped off with water on a rag.

I had a W reg 2000cc Ford Capri, fitted a new battery at work, i put the old battery behind the drivers seat.
Yes you guessed it, it flipped over and spilled on the carpet, rotted it.

For 50 years or more I have always, always taken off my watch as soon as the bonnet gets opened. Fiddling around with a sticky solenoid on an old motor last year, guess what?
My metal watch bracelet that I was in too much of a hurry to take off, touched across the terminals and burnt a big nasty chunk out of my wrist. There's no fool like an old fool LOL

I've done it a chucking various tools on top of the battery until they connected 🤦‍♂️, also got my hand caught down the back of an engine by my wedding ring that was a sod to get out , stopped wearing it after I crushed it on my finger at work , loads of claret and two pair of pliers to bend it back enough to get it off , never worn one since

Ow. Tales from my past reminder there. Married bloke jumps off back of 7.5t flatbed, ring gets caught on tie down hook. One self-amputation later. Unimpressed wifey.

Mine was down to the bone when I did it , bog roll and insulating tape for a patch up and back to work 😁
