Weird 4wd clutch behaviour

#1 by Trucktruck , Wed Apr 17, 2019 3:30 pm

Hi all,

K74 classic...

So I replaced all of the vac system hoses, new 4wd actuator solenoids, everything works great, green light goes out after 2 flashes max, 4wd 2wd engages and disengages with the associated dash lights, however...

If I key off while driving in 2wd I get a starter motor grinding noise, followed by a clunk when the truck is moving slowly enough.

This only happens in 2wd so my assumption is it's the front dog trying to ( and subsequently successfully) engaging

So no power to solenoid = 4wd trying to engage, is that normal? Is my non return not working?

Just wanted to check this was in fact not right before I start pulling stuff apart again

Cheers

Mine has always done this too - if you think about it, it is safer this way as you can leave it in 4wd and all the wheels are locked by the handbrake (or if left in gear) rather than just the front ones. I have no idea if it's right or not though
