Heating issues

#1 by Barbarian79 , Fri Jan 24, 2020 7:52 pm

Hi all

Possibly using up all my new guy question tokens, but first time owning a L200 and just need to understand if this is normal.

So... truck takes forever to get heat into the cabin. Even when the temp gauge needle e has started climbing the air in the cabin is still freezing.

Until however the midway point on the temp gauge is reached and then the heating behaves fairly normally (beside at idle) when air is cold again. But assume this is water pump related. Timing belt due so will do that at the same time.

Does the midway point relate to the stat opening? Assume until the stat has started to open a bit i wont get any cabin heat.

Not water in oil, no over heating, no air in coolant, coolant condition looks ok., no smoke from tail pipe. So assume head gasket ok.

Any ideas or thoughts. Or am I expecting too much

Again thanks all for any help

Might not be the pump, could also be an air bubble/leak in the uptake pipe to the fan block and element. First job is bleeding the cooling system, and we'll go from there.

Thanks TEK76.
Is there any mk4 L200 cooling system images available?. Will try bleeding the cooling system but as getting the timing belt done in a couple of weeks. I may find by changing stat pump at same time plus coolant change the problem may go away. Are leaks in the uptake pipe fairly common?

mine takes forever to warm up
my classic would be up to the half way after perhaps a mile or so
my new one will just about get to temp after 3 miles
once up to temp it's fine regardless of whether it's on idle or at revs

Timing belt, water pump and thermostat on order.
I will keep you posted on whether the pump, stat make any difference

Make sure you give the block / Rad etc a good flushing with a hose pipe,

So bit of an update and some further advice needed. As I'm now concerned it could be the dreaded head gasket. Question is around coolant level, my expansion tank is full (overfull) but taking off the radiator cap there is no coolant to be seen. I assume this isn't normal and the rad should be filled to the neck. Any advise help much appreciated. Couod be the reason why the the previous owner was so keen to sell!!!

There definitely should be coolant to the top of the rad - top it up and see if the same thing happens.

So not lost any coolant, what I took out of the expansion tank was enough to refill the rad and the exp tank to correct level. Let the car idle up to temp and noticed a few bubbles in the expansion tank once stat opened. I assume overtime the same thing will happen again. None of the other more obvious Head gasket signs, but fairly sure this outcome isn't gonna be great. A friend reccomends a block test, this sounds like the next port of call. Out of interest rough price for head gasket at a garage? Any recommendation for the kent south east area? Thanks again all 👍
