2002 k74 struggling to start

#1 by Markmtms , Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:23 am

Anyone switched on with a k74. Have a intermittent starting issue.
Sometimes fine then others won't fire at all.
Changed fuel filter and housing new glow plugs.
Whe not starting do have white/blue smoke from exhaust🤔
Checked stop solenoid in pump. Only getting 12v on crank not start is this normal. No faults when scanned.

Timing check and fine
12 at glow plugs
When not start will fire straight away with a sniff of start u b****d 😂

Does it only do it when the engine is cold or when it is also hot? When it does start, does it run fine and pull well?

If it does it when hot also it will not be the glowplugs. If it starts with easy start then there is a lack of fuel. I would be checking for air in the fuel system. The fuel can run back down to the tank if you have a small leak on a fuel line for corrosion etc. I had a Trooper that had a very slight leak on the fuel pick up pipe above the tank that sounds exactly the same. Is the top of the tank damp or smell of diesel? In the end, i dropped the tank and replaced the pickup pipe

yes see what u mean. I think the next thing to try is to run the pump on a separate can of diesel and leave over night and see what happens next.
full tank and lines look all dry

It was going to be my next suggestion. Run a separate can of diesel direct to the filter. It only takes a tiny leak for air to get into the fuel system and drain back to the tank. You can fit a non return valve in the fuel line also to try it. Next time it doesnt start, try priming the fuel filter until it goes hard and then try to start it

I've got it on a separate can straight to the pump. Will see what it's like in the morning.

Well this morning it started in the end but still spun over for a long time be for it did fire.
Guessing I have air getting in from pump or injectors or maybe a pump issue

Does the glow plug light illuminate when you set it to glow? My temp sender failed and occasionally caused issues when cold and when Luke warm?

Blue smoke generally oil burning, would suggest rings maybe valve issues with oil/fuel smoke only on cranking. you done a compression test?

If it's not broken yet, you're not trying hard enough.

Compression over 420psi across all 4 cylinders.
Would of though I would have more of an issue when drive but it's fine.
Really getting on my tits now

Sorry to say this, but it's probably the injector pump. Maybe just be the front seal. When this happens it tends to build up gradually, starting taking longer and longer until no start at all. When this has happened to me before it's affected the warm start worse than cold though.
