Weird thump sound...

#1 by Harley Stone , Fri May 31, 2013 4:26 pm

Hey, guys..!

Quick info: Few days ago, returning home, I noticed this thump sounds that appeared while steering the wheel (first thud while turning the steering wheel right/left, and then again when the wheel turns back straight)..
From the cabin, it sounded like its coming from somewhere in the center of the truck (might be wrong, as always with those sounds..)..

Today it continued, thou I noticed it thumps even while going over bumps/potholes or something.. Any ideas what it might be?? ..what's loose?

Thnx for any help..!
H.S.

Check you anti-roll bar bushes. Mine knocked a little from them when they were loose

Drop arm worn on the passenger side, where the steering linkeage runs to from the drivers side.

...been to a friend, lifted it up.. Found what's making all that bumps. And being a non-english speaker, I'm not sure how to translate correctly, so here's the pic .. the problem was in those rubbers at the end of the link (on both wheels).. they simply wore out. They would bump whenever the truck was leaning in corners.. No big harm. ... P.S. noticed the sound was worse while it was wet/rain outside.

They wear out quickly, I have changed mine two times in two years, I solved it by removing the anti roll bar completely

Its cool running without it, you get a boat feeling and if you do a sharp turn with full throttle you can get a front wheel to lift from the ground a little bit

And it goes allot better off-road.

I know people run without them but it is an mot fail if you remove an arb from a vehicle that left the factory with one fitted and if you were involved in a serious accident your insurance could refuse to pay out

I asked the tester when I replaced my bushes for the third time and he wasn't sure so went and looked it up in the testers manual and photocopied the relevant section for me.
however the fact that he had to look it up probably means 90% of testers wouldn't know so you would be likely to get away with it

Agree, a missing component from the vehicle should be an MOT failure...

Dont think we got enough power in our trucks but in theory you would be able to do this:

But I don't think I would recommend removing it on a truck that does allot of miles on the road because if you need to avoid something on the road like a animal or something in high speed it would be safer to hit hit then turn the wheel.

My truck only goes on road to and from off road meets.
And it makes a huge different off road so if its there your truck is the most I would recommend to remove it but put it back for mot.

In Sweden I think you can get it through MOT if you remove all brackets for it so they cant see it was ever there but not sure about it.
