Dave1968's Build Thread

#1 by Dave1968 , Mon Jun 10, 2013 11:33 pm

Hi!

I thought I'd start a thread as I've started the first steps to rebuild my tailgate with a difference. I do know what the end result will be, something out of this world; space, earth, moon and stars. A bit of art for the people who follow me on my travels.
I was going to re-spray in original silver but I thought, 'what the hell!' A bit of fun, a dare from diggermandan and lots of encouragement from from my 9yr old son is enough for me. I am currently awaiting some spray paint which I've had to order.

If I didn't start this thread the tailgate would look as hideous as it did 4 years ago until now...hmmmm, finger is pulled out.

I do have some other ideas and jobs to do (chequer plate the pickup, design a 'Mountain Top' type foldable lid, wheel re-vamp etc..) but I will stick at one thing until completion and then move onto the next etc.

A couple of pics of before:

Someone took a shot at me:

I put a straight edge on the bumps and applied slightly proud some fibre-glass:

I bought one of those disc attachments for my drill...what a God send. I have sanded with less than or at most a depth/tolerance of 1mm:

I just need to wet n dry to make silky smooth before spraying some primer. Despite its looks it is flat as I could hope for.

Here is the sort of thing I like:

Mine will definitely stand out as it will be black with flat textures and striking contrast of colour. I'm itching for the end result. I best get sketching out my ideas I guess as 'primer' time will be this weekend!! Yippee!!!

I'll update where appropriate with pic's.

There, I have committed myself. Perhaps insane!

Please feel free to voice your opinions good or bad!!

Thanks

Ha, I'll do a few prep pics on paper and get a little practice before I start. You should let a idea out to pressurise yourself too!! Always work best under pressure. I hope..

The good news is my paint arrived yesterday. The bad news is I was out so I will collect it from the Royal Mail depot tomorrow.

Today or within the last hour I wet n dry papered the fibre glass and rough edges:

[img][/img]

Its smooth all over despite its looks.

I intend to practice some artwork on Tuesday evening. I'll gloss some old boards tomorrow in preparation and try out some cosmic images and practice some techniques.

Keep you posted!

Hello again!

I'll make the excuses first but please bear with me. The spray paint I bought is ok, the nozzles are not directional, that matters to me. Quick straight lines become 'misty'.
I am missing a light and dark green so I mixed light blue with yellow, ok'ish but not what I wanted but ok.

The background I used is the back of some old warped laminate flooring which peeled..it is a practice board so that's ok. Not good however for mixing paint and warm air such as this evening. The moon is less dramatic as it should be due to the above issues, honest!!!!

I do need to practice some stars especially shooting stars and my planets. Planets are quite easy with practice on a small scale but on a large its setting times and climate. Spraying clear gloss does help this issue.

Here are a few pics of a general 'space-scape', I can add whatever I want. I'm hoping the brakelight on the tailgate will be a feature, a UFO perhaps!?

If you like say what you think may look good and post some pics for me to copy. I can only try those ideas out and thank you for the interest and your idea. Saturn usually always comes up on 'space-scapes' so it may appear too. Another practice run or two.

I don't want to over busy the picture but I may make the earth ALOT bigger.

I have purposely not glossed the end product as it is only my first practice.
Here are some pics:

You can notice here the mist of white, its not as clinically clean a line I want. Cheap practice spray..

Here is the end product:

Admittedly the material of the background was not helpful, nor did a acrylic clear lacquer help but its a first practice. I will continue to practice on paper I think be easier.

Different angle different light aspect:

Not a great pic next but a idea of contrast and perspective to the tailgate:

Any ideas welcomed!

Thanks! I was saving on the blue hence the clipped corner. The earth will be approximately two thirds bigger. It dried too early..

Cheers daz! I'm not going to rush it, practice makes perfect etc. The main issue will be the bevelled edge of the tailgate. I'll have to do it in stages, that's learned already. I was hoping for a lot of 'wet' work but the earth and moon will need a little extra time. That tonight took 9 mins.

Please don't mate, if you have the ability to get this far with the tub then it would be a shame to let that talent go to waste.
