Overheating NOT L200

#1 by ronniecabers , Mon Aug 19, 2013 7:13 am

Hi All,

Work has purchased a van that overheats sometimes :

'Symptoms are as follows: Runs fine at tickover and low speed (below 50mph in top gear), but the minute the engine is put under any load, the temperature rises, once the revs drop back it cools quickly back down to 90 degrees. I have spoken to a mechanic friend and he believes that head gasket failure is the most likely culprit.

Thermostat has been removed (didn't really make any difference) and the bottom radiator hose feels cool (even after a 10 mile drive).

Prior to me getting the van the previous owner had a water loss issue, and fitted and brand new radiator (cost £120).'

Van is a Peugeot Expert 2.0HDi on a Y plate ( just wanted as a cheap runabout! )

Now I'm not convinced on that description of what is wrong that's its the head gasket....I'm thinking more along the lines of waterpump.......

What you guys ( and gals ) think?

Work decided that as I own an L200 I would be able to fix it up.....not sure what they meant by that

Are the blowers hot?
Any bubbling in expansion tank?
Does the temp gauge once its high drop rapidly if you blip the accelerator?
Are the coolant levels correct?
Does it blow any coolant out?

Is the van white?

The trouble with removing the stat is the water doesn't cool the engine, as it circulates too fast.
The water needs to go around the engine slower, absorbing the heat then taking it back to the radiator for cooling down.
I agree looking like HGF.

Cheers Nick ( & WB ),

would the bottom hose still be cool with a failed HG? ( might be obvious to some but not me! )

Cheers

either internal or externally bloked. could be full of mud or some of the internal channels could be blocked. Are there cold spots on the rad?
