Just having cambelt replaced (getting PAS and AC belts done at same time money saved by buying all at Milners bought a water pump as well but not from Milners).

Mechanic has just rang to say cam belt kit doesn't come with a hydraulic tensioner so he has ordered one from local factors.

Phoned Milners to see if tensioner came with kit and if I have subsequently misplaced it but Milners say tensioner does not come with kit and shouldn't need replacing unless massive mileage done (mine has done 83000).

Milners price for tensioner £44, factors price £110.

The same factors sold me a crankshaft oil seal for £3 two days earlier compared with the £30 plus VAT that local main dealer wanted, and they had it in stock (which dealer didnt).

Should I just chalk it down to experience and an enthusiastic mechanic?

I`d chalk it down to the mechanic either should be sending back the new one or paying for it himself, if it was me ........ I always ask Milners if theres anything I should know or ask about what I`m buying from them.

NO, do not disregard what the mechanic has said, do the tensioner and be safe, hydraulic tensioners do fail, far easier than the conventional 'sprung' ones. Without any doubt get it changed, I have done two sets of tappets on new shapes ( older I will admit 56 and 08 )...One where the belt had skipped and the other it had broken... don't skip it mate, the factors one maye be dearer, but add up the Milmers cost with the VAT and delivery, you'll be best part of £60 anyway.
