Battery not charging

#1 by Cobra , Wed May 06, 2015 7:16 pm

Hi all quick question, I recently removed my battery to start another vehicle with it. On returning the battery to the 4x4 it would not start. tried Jump leads but think they were faulty. finally had to borrow another battery. It started fine but the volt meter on dash showed power was dropping. I must add here that the battery warning light on the instrument panel stayed off once the vehicle was started and all the time I was driving... I drove approx 27 mile I was in a emergency situation so could not stop. I lost all lights and my rev counter went erratic although the engine ran fine. I finally got home close to midnight exhausted had a bath and went to bed.

This morning I took the battery off and put it on charge. using my booster I put another 4x4 battery on and started her up. Battery light came on as usual when I turned on the ignition and went off within secs of engine starting. when I put multimeter on battery with engine running it showed 12.37volts HAS MY ALTERNATOR GONE? if yes why does battery warning light not show?

With your engine running I would expect to see nearer 14v if the battery is being charged

Strip the alternator down probably just needs new bushes and or a regulator

Yeah thats what I would expect too, stupid thing is that my central locking works with engine on but not when I turn ignition on so suggestions to strip alternator down look like best bet

the alterantor is not putting enough out to charge the battery but just enough to make things work by the sounds of it,

try a reading with the truck running and everything on ie lights on full beam heater blowing full on hot heated screen on radio on then see what V u get at the battery

voltage meter on dash drops rapid when I put everything on. with rain today couldnt test. will do it in the morning but like others have suggested strip down of alternator looks like best way forward. Just strange that battery warning light doesnt come on.

Sounds stupid but make sure the belt isn't slipping first before you start stripping things down. Also a good squirt of wd40 in it whilst it's running. It's helped mine before after I've been wading. Think crap can get between the bushes sometimes.

Belts all nice and firm, but might try the WD40 trick after getting under her and seeing the nightmare I have to dismantle to get her out, thanks will keep forum updated on progress.

before you remove it, start it up with no load and pull the alternator relay, should then see 14v, if not let us know

Morning Peeps, I have removed the alternator stripped it down and fitted the new Bush and regulator part. The problem I have is getting the shaft with bearing on past the new bushes. I have broken one already and had to strip it down again and put a new one in. Yes I know the perfect solution would be buy a new alternator, unfortunately I am disabled and not working at the moment because of health issues, so serious suggestions please. I am already at the point of desperation, I am basically house bound without my beloved truck

If someone has a working spare alternator at a decent price I would be more than happy to see if I can afford it, I think I made a mistake trying to repair mine but at least I tried
