Modern renaults have lots of weird goings on with pulleys that have no keyways etc. You really need the correct locking tools or the engine will go out of time while the pulleys appear to have stayed put.

This garage is run by a mate of mine who has loads of renault experience. Maybe worth a ring for advice and an idea on ow much to expect to pay.

The front crank shaft pulley on Renaults are free floating as Rob says, there is no keyway to lock them up. There are special locking kits available for them but usually cost about £80. What I do though is get under the motor & tipex a mark on the botom of the flywheen & gearbox, this gives a reference for the crank position, then take of the top timing belt cover & tipex a mark on the pulley & the cylinder head. once you have these marks & they are both spot on you can buzz off the bottom pulley & remove all the timing covers. The fuel pump should be a high pressure pump so technically doesnt need timed but I usually mark this aswell. Just check again that the marks you have put on the flywheel & camshaft pulley are spot on before removing the belt. when fitting again check & double check the marks once the belt has been tentioned. if all is good refit the covers apart from the top one. check marks & refit the crank pulley. once this is tight again check the marks if they are still aligned them all should be good.

please note though that Im a mechanic & have done loads of belts this way BUT I know what im doing, if you are unsure get a pro to do it as if you feck it up then you WILL damage the engine.

not at all Al, modern day engines dont have the same designs as old motors, non interference engines are not heard of now adays so if anyone is attempting one themselve they really need to know what they are doing.
