Clay shooting

#1 by surfer , Sat Jul 19, 2014 8:30 pm

On a serious note, not to hijack bezs thread about shot guns
Seriously thinking about clay shooting for my next hobby, not into killing game ect
How do I start? Gun club?
I know I would need a licence,a gun cabinet,
What do you guys use ?
Liking the idea of a pump action,I know some of you have them amongst others
Many thanks in advance

Al

you will find that most gun clubs etc will either not allow or wont like the use of pump action or even semi-autos as unlike an over and under you can see that they are broken and empty. ive got a few local clay shoots by me. i would suggest you get an over and under for starts as i think you need a firearms licence to have a pump or semi auto but dont quote me on that but it is a seriously good sport to get into and great fun too although can be quite expensive

My clay shoot grounds would not let use use a pump action they despise semi auto as it is,can't tell if there's still one in the chamber.
It's a catch 22 you need a licence to join a club but need to be a member of a club to get your licence. I found that if you go a few times with another member and get to know the guys in charge they are more willing to let you join first before you get your gun licence.
I use a Browning 325 sporting both for clay's and for rough shooting.Cartridges 7s for clay's 6s for rough.
Get the gun fitted to you from the start you will shoot better.
If the the gun fits you you do not need to spend thousands on a gun.
Hope that helps AD.

Find a decent club you can go shoot with no cert needed. You can also get a shotgun cert without belonging to a club or having land to shoot on. Providing you meet the criteria you don't legally need a reason to hold a shotgun cert although its best not to say you have no reason when you have your FLO interview.
As for semi auto a lot of clubs are not keen but do allow and although most of my shooting is not clays I have seen pumps at clay grounds. You only need a section 1 firearms licence if it is a semi or pump able to be loaded with more than 3 shots then it becomes section 1 and you need a reason to hold.

Cheers
Paul.

Course you can, Just use a breach flag. It's what i use in my Semi Auto so everyone knows the gun is 100% safe;

Sorry chap but i have to strongly Disagree with you there.

I have never had anyone turn me away from using my Semi Auto and I've been shooting for quite a few years. The rest of the world shoots with Semi Auto shotguns, It's just the UK that are stuck using the old ways mostly. The only real pain is having to pick up all the Spent Cartridges afterwards.

@surfer The one thing to remember is a LOT, and i mean a LOT of people in the Clay community go quite over the top when it comes to getting into the sport, We have a lot of people at our club that have £5,000+ Guns with £1,000 worth of tweet clothing etc. Truth be told the difference between a £300 second hand Gun and a £10,000 gun is minimum for a beginner. As long as the gun fits you well you are away. The only bit of kit worth investing in is sturdy shoes and a shooting vest so you have something to hold your Cartridges. Everything else is Minor.

PM me if you need any more info, And if you find your self in my neck of the woods you are more than welcome to join me.

I've been looking in to this for a while. I've managed to find a local club but I'm looking for a budget beginners gun to get me started. Any recommendations?

The hatsan arms Escort semi auto I use retails for about 550 New in the magnum chamber size. I got mine for 250 second hand one year old off a guy selling on pigeon watch forum who wasn't selling it very well. Great gun, never lets me down and shoots better than my more expencive over and under.

As Fielder said the Hatsan Arms Escort semi seems to be a popular shotgun and from what I've read and seen it is very reliable, I think you just need to change the O rings everynow and then. Check out Guntrader, you can get some good deals on there, and you can search by region, make, price etc.

I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster pump that I picked up for £250 , so you can get good deals, you just need to keep an eye out. I just shoot on farms with my mate at the minute, I'm not a member of a club, so I've yet to encounter a member of the 'Tweed Brigade' giving me dirty looks because I have a pump and am wearing Realtree!
Have you checked out Practical Shotgun? That looks like good fun and it's all semi's and pump actions, could be a club near you? It's something I'd like to get into when I'm back in the UK fulltime.

I know of a lot of Hatstands that cycle OK BUT I also know of the same number that jam for no reason. A bit more expensive but Beretta Extrema 2 will cycle anything (there is a good pic of @Alan G shooting it somewhere) if I spend countless hours/days hunting Geese I want to know the gun will work there is one onPW for £600

a friends Hatsan stated to Jam a bit, we worked out it was due to mixed size carts and using smaller Weights in a Magnum. Started using 27s and he was fine.
