Winches....

#1 by Fielder , Fri Aug 01, 2014 2:48 pm

So I should have a winch bumper in the next couple of weeks, So i guess the next step is a Winch.

Anything to look out for? Any buying guides out there? How hard are they to install?

Bolt pattern on most winch's are 254mm x 114mm centres. Simple four bolt install onto the winch plate. Stay away from wire so buy a plasma rope and an alloy fairlead and not those horrible stupid roller type you get for wire. Wiring into the battery and isolators is simple and thats coming from me who manages to fec almost evey auto wiring issue I tackle.

Dead simples to do. Ideally look for a winch with a separate/moveable solenoid box, then mount it as high up at the back of the engine bay as possible because you are a nutter and will drown the thing. You also want a waterproof motor, but they are pretty standard.

9500lb minimum. You will likely need a winch able to drag your sorry ass out from being grounded so you are looking for a hefty one. The cables are pretty hefty so getting it inside the cab could be difficult.

I have the solenoid for my winch mounted on the inner wing behind the headlight, its an albright unit so getting swamped is not an issue. As for motors none are actually water proof, but Superwinch do some very good ones that do keep water out for a long time. Best thing is learn how to strip the motor to clean it, not really a hard job. Defo go plasma but remember it does not like rubbing on rocks and things so carry a bit of carpet...

Going to try and find the time to just get the winch wired up for now and put a neoprene cover on to protect the solenoid maintime. :-(
