Lack of power uphill

#1 by Cobra , Fri Aug 08, 2014 9:34 pm

This may have been covered elsewhere so please feel free to point out this point.
Tuesday last week I took a trip up to Dumfries pulling a 15 foot trailer with a Fiat Punto onboard. I noticed every time I hit an incline my speed would drop from 60 down to 30. the lack of power has started to worry me.
I then had to go to a site at Rhigos South Wales. as people with experience of the area will know The A465 has many uphill climbs. going down hill I felt like king of the road, going uphill I could have buried my head in the floor pan.
no smoke apart from the occasional black cloud as I changed gear to try keep momentum going. No over revs from clutch slip, but from 60 down to 30 with nothing on the back. I read a few articles on the lack of power on my mobile phone that just confused me, so waited until I got back home to come on forum to ask you lads and lass's.

any idea's please

Do you get any EML come on ( more so does it come on and go off with the ignition)...

I have had,and to some degree still have this issue..sometimes it eats hills towing my caravan, others its pittyful.i fitted a gen mitzi power upgrade and had the dealer re write the ecu..its much better now but ive said many times and stand by this..they are not great tow vehicles from my personal experience.for a 2.5 l truck it should not know anything is on the back, but it does..its always been difficult for me to accept as ive always had land rovers, discovery's mainly and they are the king of towers in my oppinion.

Asuming you have no faults with the truck i would just out it down to it being what it is..fantastic utility vehicle, tonnes of load space but crap towing...again,just my experience..everytime i take my caravan out i come back thinking " i need something with more power" but then general day to day use,i love it..

I expected a little less pulling power with trailer up hill, but towing nothing should have been a breeze, yet same problem. on the flat she goes like the wind. I wonder if anyone lives in my area and has same truck could let me glance at vac pipe configuration under bonnet, just a thought ????

I dont know if its simply a case of some aren't great towers while some are..mine displays the very same issues you have..its bewildering..some days it tows up Everest like your on the flat, then others it struggles with less weight..i wish there was an answer as its the one and only reason i keep toying with selling..and trust me,i really dont want to

just have a check around the rear of the rocker cover incase there is a pipe off. Have you check all the pipes for holes or splits ?

mmmm this is one I was speaking to Lez about earlier, I have one pipe that I cant find where it goes. it has a vacuum action but I have visually checked put my hands all over the rocker rear and cannot locate where it goes.
