Front drive auto lock system

#1 by Antonio , Tue Sep 16, 2014 7:56 am

Hi all, gonna get the bucket looked at today cos can't work out what's wrong with it...but just wondered if anyone knows how it works. There is no actuator, vacume canister, selonoid etc as per workshop manuals?.
I'm guessing when front diff is on it locks into the hubs?

I agree - if it's a cheap enough option I would do this anyway - there is really no negatives to it - more MPG on road - less tyre wear on road - quickly pop out & flick them round - TRACTIONNNNN!!! :p =]

Would be simpler to have manual hubs, less problems too....i agree with that
Just wait for the phone call, if he says its the hubs i'l change em over asap or i'l never get off road!

was working @123hotchef before i know cos first time i went to Kirton all weekend it was ok, can see when it looses traction in videos i have front wheel spinin etc. and when it snowed too.
lets say its after it was borrowed once that it don't work anymore.
thinking mine is an early autolock due to its age, and is an import.

No @Kurt mate, none of that, actuator or hoses etc, just like manual lock, hubs and shafts must work on centrifugal force or something to kick in. But in 4x4 front prop and driveshafts lock in, cv spin in behind wheel, just hubs not lock in.

I would guess its very similar to the early trooper/frontera system with auto hubs.
Your not able to shift in 4WD while moving.

WOAH THERE @Antonio .... Sounds like you have the very useful auto locking hubs.
What you effectively have is a(bi-directional) 1 way bearing in your front hub. It will probably lock itself as you apply torque through the drive shaft. It is what I have and it is basically the manual locking hubs but you don't have to get dirty to engage them!

Kind of work like:

You can shift into 4wd while moving SLOWLY and preferably in a straight line.

Oh and to disengage, you just move the transfer lever into 2H(again, moving SUPER slow because there is no syncro in the transfer box) if your front axle doesn't disengage it isn't really a problem, it will rotate your diff but that is all. It will disengage the first time you reverse about a metre

yea mitsy quoted £375, apparently there is a grubscrew that has sheered off in the lock on the pasanger side..... will take it to bits and see if i can repair it properly...if not will resort to manual for now,....
also powersteer pipe that runs under radiator has leak, and new sump needed....but thats another story
