chemistry

#1 by ronniecabers , Mon Oct 06, 2014 6:10 pm

Now I was rubbish at chemistry as a kid ( kept trying to blow things up! )....son has come home with homework and I'm completely stumped and thought I ask the good folk on here .... so here goes....

Use the following experimental data to deduce the ratio of sulphur to the other element in the compounds...

Mass of element ( g ) | mass of sulphur ( g )
1 . 50 | 15.6
2 . 50 | 23.4

Part b...
If compound 1 contains two sulphur atoms for each one of the other element, how many sulphur atoms are there in compound 2

Now if you understand it ( not me ) and can answer it, can you please explain it to me in simpletons language so I can explain it to a 13 year old boy!

Many thankses folkses. ...

my logic may be flawed and it's a long time since I did chemistry but ............

I'm thinking
50 divided by 15.6 will give you 3.2
then multiply that by the 23.4 and it'll give you the answer .......... of 75
so ........ if each is 25 would that not give the 2 parts to 1 ratio mentioned ?

The first is 10.4:1 (I think)
10.4g sulphur too every 1g of the other element
the second is 9.36:1
9.36g sulphur too 1g of the other element

Yeah unfortunately lots of chemistry on the net!.. did try earlier and just couldn't narrow it down enough

The worrying thing is he asked his teacher and she didn't know!

That's what they call research it part of the question, when he produces the answer the next question will be how he arrived at this answer
If he gets it off here and the teacher takes a look at the forum,we're all going to jail not a bin lol

Ok.....but his textbook says ratios are always whole numbers.

' when elements combine, the numbers of particles of each ate always in a small whole number ratio. It is not likely that you will find a ratio such as 1:2:7 or even 25:63. This is known as the law of multiple proportions; the ratios are always simple ones.'
