Deep water and cam belt

#1 by Rob1307 , Wed Oct 08, 2014 2:18 am

I know the alternator is a weak point when playing in water with a classic but has anyone found muddy water getting into cam belt area behind plastic covers , mine don't appear to be the most robust of things and not sure how well they seal , with more offroading planned next year I didn't want to have premature cam belt failure due to muddy water ingress

Not heard of any problems with this, but if you do end up doing some serious wading it might be wise to remove the cover and do a bit of house work after you've been off road. You should always wash down underneath and clean the brakes after a day in the mud anyway...

My timing belt jumped a tooth in the water during a forum outing at Inverness, on taking the covers off there was plenty of evidence of dirty water having got in, however I put it down to an incorrectly tensioned belt being aided to slip by the water.

I put a gates belt on and was in the water with it several times after that with no issues.

is there there a crankshaft breather available for the l200 like you get for the land rover 300tdi engines or is the cuver not sealed on the l200 engine

The l200 engine only has a plastic cover over belts , not much there to stop water and mud ingress
